Nine Network Upfronts 2018

The Nine Network today presented its upfronts to advertisers and the media.

Hugh Marks, CEO of Nine reported that the network is enjoying a bumper 2017 with ratings successes in many areas. So far this year the network has achieved a 2.2% share point increase compared to the same period last year between 6.00pm and 10.30pm.

He also reported that Nine’s main channel is currently number one in total people and the important younger demographic groups.

Consolidated 28-days, Share% 5 station primary, 6pm-midnight

“A year ago at the Nine Upfront I spoke about how in 2017 we would look to lift the ratings performance and consistency of our schedule,” he said.

“With more than 2.6 share points of growth in prime time on Channel Nine across all of the key demographics that matter most to you, I feel we have delivered.

“Our entertainment slate is strong and we now have hit shows every quarter. Add this to our audiences for news and sport and Nine offers consistency of audience delivery across the entire year.”

The year started with a stripped series of Married at First Sight which proved to be a smash hit with TV viewers and one of the most highly streamed programs since OzTAM introduced its video player measurement (VPM) system. Married at First Sight is up considerably year-on-year, in fact by 19 per cent with People 16-39 and by more than 20 per cent with Total People.

Nine has continued to roll out top-rating programs including The Voice, as well as a slew of brand new formats that have all performed exceptionally well, such as Travel Guides, True Story with Hamish & Andy and This Time Next Year.

But the breakout hit of 2017 was Australian Ninja Warrior, that broke ratings records and is the number one non-sports program of the year.

Currently on air now, The Block, now in its 13th series, is showing no signs of slowing down, with audiences up 20 per cent on 2016.

Still to come this year Family Food Fight, is Nine’s new cooking show.

And Nine’s news and current affairs lineup is the strongest in Australia, with Nine News once again taking the ratings crown in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Nine’s audience momentum has also translated in the digital sphere, where Nine has continued to innovate and drive significant audience growth across its various online platforms.

Nine.com.au, including 9news.com.au, remains in the top tier of Australian news websites ranked in July, recording a unique audience of 4.499 million (Nielsen Digital Ratings Monthly July 2017).

Meanwhile, 9Now has an average monthly user base of more than 2 million users and top-rating shows, such as Married at First Sight, often pulling unique audiences of more than 100,000 for episodes online.

Sign-ups to the platform have surged to just under 4.5 million and audience growth on the platform is up by 114 per cent, delivering viewers in a premium-brand safe environment.

The Nine upfronts gave some information about year-to-date demographics, but unfortunately no the whole story.

The most recognisable numbers were posted above as 28-day consolidated share for each of the main channels. That showed Nine’s main channel ahead in total people as well as the 2 demos.

image

Unfortunately missing was anything about the network demo shares. I have Nine’s network share ahead on overnight numbers in each of the three demo groups but still to see if consolidated numbers change that outcome.

You can read more re Nine’s presentation about the demos at the link below.

The problem with 23 Thursday night games on nine is that they’ve got Ray Hadley calling all those games. He’s woeful.

Nine Entertainment’s investment on digital in the past 3-4 years have certainly paid off. These sites certainly make Yahoo7 group of sites look second rate. What is Seven going to do with them? I hope its upfronts on October 27 will give us some answers.

Stop airing “Fun with Dick & Jane” (2005) every 2nd week!

Sick of seeing Jim Carrey & Tea Leoni on the TV :expressionless:fun

And that goes for all the other old Warner Bros or Roadshow repeats in your system.

Are you going to complain about Seven recently showing the DaVinci Code which had previously been much repeated on Nine.

Getting back to the Upfront, I thought it was meant to be cough, cough

Talking about their shows for next year?

Not detailing their ratings performance to date

Yeh upfronts is a presentation to advertisers. They need to frame a narrative to advertisers to want to buy ads for the rest of the year and into next year.

Ratings analysis feeds into that narrative.

I think you will find most upfronts talk about why advertisers should invest in their shows and the evidence would normally be how their shows have done in the year just been or how successful they are at launching new shows etc…

UNLIKELY TO AIR IN 2018

Here Come the Habibs: Following a wave of pre-emptive outrage, this comedy did well for Nine in 2016 – but ratings have since softened.

Murder Calls: This true crime series struggled to stay above the half-million viewer mark.

Love Child: After four seasons, it could be the end for Love Child, set in a Kings Cross hospital in the 1960s and '70s. “We’ve seen shows come back before after not [being confirmed at the annual program launch],” Turner says. “There’s no announcement for now.”

House Husbands: There is some hope for this local drama – Nine is working on scripts and funding arrangements with producers. But no guarantees of a sixth season just yet.

I know this year, 20-1 aired 5 episodes. After that it was replaced by Australia Ninja Warrior. Do you know whether Nine will continue the unaired episodes of 2017 next year?
