SBS Director of Television and Online Content, Marshall Heald, said: “SBS has made its biggest ever commitment to one-off documentaries in 2021, with eight being screened as part of this unmissable collection. Each documentary is distinct, compelling and meaningful with an ambition and scale never seen before. Together they capture what SBS is known for, exploring contemporary Australia in a unique, bold and entertaining way.”

Alex West, Head of Documentary at Screen Australia, said: “We are proud to support this collection of powerful documentaries that explore a range of complex and pressing issues that impact all Australians. Over eight weeks, SBS has curated a high calibre line-up and I look forward to viewers engaging with these captivating documentaries.”

Documentary Australia Foundation CEO, Mitzi Goldman, said: “It is very exciting to see the return of one off feature Australian documentaries to the SBS slate and what a powerful line up of incredible stories told with fine storytelling skill. Some of these have been many years in the making and others capture a time and behaviour that, although we may have lived through it, it is impossible to capture the enormity of the cultural impact unless it is compiled together into a narrative that allows us to reflect on what is and has happened around us.”

The partnership between SBS and Documentary Australia Foundation will also support these films with a focus on further outreach, education and impact strategies that leverage the broadcast of these unique stories.

All eight of the Australia Uncovered documentaries will be available to stream on SBS On Demand with subtitles in five languages: Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean, allowing more Australians to engage in these important topics.

SBS’s dedicated website for teachers, SBS Learn , will release new teacher resources in support of Australia Uncovere d. Launching October 11, these materials will focus on three key themes featured in the documentaries; justice, equity and health. Clips from the films, conversation guides and lesson scaffolds will inspire teaching and learning about important issues explored in the documentary strand.

The Australia Uncovered s trand launches with Strong Female Lead on SBS Sunday, 12 September at 8:30pm. Available after broadcast on SBS On Demand. All documentaries will be repeated at 10pm Wednesdays on SBS VICELAND from 15 September.

Inside Central Station: Australia’s Busiest Railway

From Sunday 12 September at 07:30 PM

Journey inside one of the world’s biggest rail networks with new SBS documentary series Inside Central Station: Australia’s Busiest Railway.

A massive lightning strike takes out a signal box bringing trains to a stand-still, stranding thousands of passengers. A woman faints into the path of an oncoming train. A once in a generation rain event derails a heritage train and much of the rail network. For 11,000 people in NSW, dealing with these problems is all part of the job running one of Australia’s busiest rail networks – Sydney Trains.

Premiering 7:30pm Sunday 12 September, 10-part documentary series, Inside Central Station: Australia’s Busiest Railway is a rich mix of unscripted high stakes drama, extraordinary engineering marvels, memorable, diverse characters who are passionate about their jobs, quirky moments, and a strong sense of Australian history.

Narrated by Shane Jacobson , this immersive observational series provides Australians with unique access to Central Station with camera crews embedded at the station, the Rail Operations Centre (The ROC) and on the tracks and platforms of the vast network.

With its resident population of more than 5 million people, in addition to boosts from business and tourism, Sydney’s rail system is under extreme pressure 24/7. As the city recovers from 2020’s COVID lockdowns, incidents occur everyday – crime, extreme weather, accidents, breakdowns, delays and rail upgrades and maintenance under time pressures.

Producers were given exclusive access to every facet of rail operations, offering viewers a unique insight into the characters and human stories that make up life at Central Station. Sydney Trains Chief Executive Matt Longland cites the dedicated staff that keep the network moving smoothly. “This is a true look behind the scenes at our operations and shows the extraordinary commitment, skill and good humour our people bring to their work every single day as they keep our customers moving in an environment where anything can happen at any time. They are the true stars of this network.”

As SBS Director of Television and Online Content, Marshall Heald said, “The scale and breadth of the access is brilliant and will certainly take viewers to unexpected places.”

Inside Central Station : Australia’s Busiest Railway will be subtitled in five languages: Simplified Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Traditional Chinese and Korean. All subtitled versions will be available to stream at SBS On Demand on the day of premiere.

As a transport buff myself I am looking forward to Inside Central Station.

I notice that the show is made by ITV Studios Australia but distributed by Fred Media.

It’s no doubt been pointed out before, but someone at SBS must be obsessed with trains as Australia’s multicultural public broadcaster has aired quite a few railway-themed documentaries and programs over the last few years!
