Inside Central Station: Australia’s Busiest Railway

From Sunday 12 September at 07:30 PM

Journey inside one of the world’s biggest rail networks with new SBS documentary series Inside Central Station: Australia’s Busiest Railway.

A massive lightning strike takes out a signal box bringing trains to a stand-still, stranding thousands of passengers. A woman faints into the path of an oncoming train. A once in a generation rain event derails a heritage train and much of the rail network. For 11,000 people in NSW, dealing with these problems is all part of the job running one of Australia’s busiest rail networks – Sydney Trains.

Premiering 7:30pm Sunday 12 September, 10-part documentary series, Inside Central Station: Australia’s Busiest Railway is a rich mix of unscripted high stakes drama, extraordinary engineering marvels, memorable, diverse characters who are passionate about their jobs, quirky moments, and a strong sense of Australian history.

Narrated by Shane Jacobson , this immersive observational series provides Australians with unique access to Central Station with camera crews embedded at the station, the Rail Operations Centre (The ROC) and on the tracks and platforms of the vast network.

With its resident population of more than 5 million people, in addition to boosts from business and tourism, Sydney’s rail system is under extreme pressure 24/7. As the city recovers from 2020’s COVID lockdowns, incidents occur everyday – crime, extreme weather, accidents, breakdowns, delays and rail upgrades and maintenance under time pressures.

Producers were given exclusive access to every facet of rail operations, offering viewers a unique insight into the characters and human stories that make up life at Central Station. Sydney Trains Chief Executive Matt Longland cites the dedicated staff that keep the network moving smoothly. “This is a true look behind the scenes at our operations and shows the extraordinary commitment, skill and good humour our people bring to their work every single day as they keep our customers moving in an environment where anything can happen at any time. They are the true stars of this network.”

As SBS Director of Television and Online Content, Marshall Heald said, “The scale and breadth of the access is brilliant and will certainly take viewers to unexpected places.”

Inside Central Station : Australia’s Busiest Railway will be subtitled in five languages: Simplified Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Traditional Chinese and Korean. All subtitled versions will be available to stream at SBS On Demand on the day of premiere.

As a transport buff myself I am looking forward to Inside Central Station.

I notice that the show is made by ITV Studios Australia but distributed by Fred Media.

It’s no doubt been pointed out before, but someone at SBS must be obsessed with trains as Australia’s multicultural public broadcaster has aired quite a few railway-themed documentaries and programs over the last few years!

Australia’s Health Revolution with Dr. Michael Mosley

From Wednesday 13 October at 07:30 PM, 3 episodes

Renowned doctor and trusted medical journalist Dr. Michael Mosley is back in Australia to tackle the nation’s fastest growing chronic disease, type 2 diabetes, in his new landmark series Australia’s Health Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley which premieres Wednesday 13 October at 7.30pm on SBS.

Working with proud Gomeroi man and exercise physiologist Ray Kelly, Dr. Mosley puts his own body on the line to demonstrate the latest science and to show just how quickly you can eat your way into, and out of, ill health.

To demonstrate this, Dr. Mosley follows an average Australian diet and in just two weeks, his blood sugar levels become pre-diabetic and pushes his blood pressure worryingly high - highlighting the root of Australia’s obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic.

Dr. Mosley isn’t on this journey alone. He and Ray meet with eight brave Australians diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes who dream of getting their health back and turning their lives around. Together with Ray, Dr. Mosley will guide the participants through drastic diet changes in an attempt to reverse the effects of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes through lifestyle adjustments, rather than medicine.

Dr Michael Mosley said: “Because it is increasingly common, we’ve grown far too complacent about the dramatic surge in rates of type 2 diabetes, driven by weight gain. If we’re going to tackle our obesity epidemic, then we need to understand how our bodies work so we can reverse the damage we are doing.

“I was really shocked by how quickly my weight, blood pressure and blood sugar levels rose when I started eating far more ultra-processed foods, the sort of diet many Australians follow. I want to show people simple ways we can all improve our health, and that every bit counts. I hope people are surprised and perhaps alarmed when they watch this show – I want it to challenge what you think you know about food and health, and I hope it illustrates just how deadly increased blood sugars can be. But also, how we can beat it.”

Marshall Heald , SBS Director of Television and Online Content, said: “SBS aims to bring attention to issues that affect all Australians. This new series will illustrate the extraordinary impact that the right lifestyle and dietary changes can have on chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes. We hope this series educates and inspires, and most of all makes a positive impact on people’s lives.”

Celia Tait, Executive Producer Artemis Media, said: “There has never been a more important time to be healthy. Now, as we grapple with the complexity of living amidst a pandemic, it’s all the more important to share the latest science around type 2 diabetes reversal. We take heart and inspiration from Dr Michael Mosley, Ray Kelly and the participants whose stories we follow and who show us how to live a healthier life.”

In addition to the SBS broadcast, NITV will air a suite of supportive programming that explores the type 2 diabetes epidemic in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

At 8:35pm on Wednesday 13 October on Living Black , Karla Grant speaks with Dr Mosley about what fired his passion to take the fight against type 2 diabetes globally and gets the answers on why the disease is so prolific in Indigenous communities.

On Wednesday 20 October at 8:35pm, Karla Grant interviews Ray Kelly, exploring the hurdles he faced in his journey to become an exercise physiologist, and how he’s using his knowledge to aid Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples as they tackle type 2 diabetes.

Australia’s Health Revolution with Dr. Michael Mosley will be available to stream on SBS On Demand , with subtitled versions available in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean.

An Artemis Media production for SBS. Principal production investment from Screen Australia in association with SBS. Financed with support from Screenwest and Lotterywest.

The Bowraville Murders

Sunday 26 September at 08:30 PM

Our African Roots

Sunday 17 October at 08:30 PM

Author and journalist Santilla Chingaipe unearths Australia’s forgotten black African history and reveals the role people of African descent played in events that shaped the nation - from the First Fleet to the Eureka Rebellion, and beyond.

Did you know that at least ten men of African descent were transported to Australia on the First Fleet?

Santilla is an author and journalist who rips up the monocultural myth of Australia’s white foundation narratives and colours in our nation’s history books by re-telling the stories of the black African convicts, bushrangers, feminists and rebels who played a seminal role in events that shaped the nation. Australian history has been whitewashed for too long – it’s time to discover our African roots.

An act of historical truth-telling, Our African Roots interrogates the myths of Australia’s white foundation narratives, colours in our nation’s history, and reveals modern Australia’s origin story to be a complex, multicultural and multiracial affair. For Santilla, the mission is personal. If Australia continues to whitewash its own history and erase the stories of people of colour, it means the contributions of contemporary African Australians like her are also in danger of being dismissed or forgotten.
