I suspect the NRL has asked Nine to put the NRL finals on the main channel in Melbourne now that they know Nine can’t get the AFL until 2032 at least?
Or is the AFL rights announcement just a coincidence?

Coincidence I’d say.

Updated 13/09/22
Given Nine is committed to show the AFL Footy Show telethon next Thursday, it may have to show double episodes of The Block on Tuesday or Wednesday, to ensure the reveal episode will air on the following Sunday (September 25).
Nine could also move the Monday Block to either 9Gem or 9GO!
I don’t think they would want to schedule an episode against the funeral.
9 News will be delayed tonight in Eastern States due to the NRL Elimination Final running overtime.
This should boost Sydney and Brisbane News ratings but will definitely hurt Nine News’s ratings in Melbourne.
Update: Nine News started at 6.09pm.
Despite the late start to the news, The Block started on time on the east coast.
Friday 23 September 7:30 pm
Adelaide, Perth on Nine ; Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane on 9Gem
Episode 1 Kathy & Tom
Beechworth locals Tom and Kathy are returning to town. With ties to the infamous bushranger, Ned Kelly, the town is full of Australian History. It also has a rugged beauty and country charm. Catriona Rowntree finds out what’s been calling Tom and Kathy back to live here.
Episode 2 Ainslie and Eliza
Giddy up! Catriona in outback Queensland with horse-obsessed best friends, Ainslie and Eliza. Catriona shows them homes that are a country-living ensemble of horses, pigs, rocking chairs, backyard cricket lawns and a hills hoist. She is on the case to find a perfect new home in Toowoomba for Ainslie and Eliza.
