Tokyo Olympics Coverage

I saw the whole closing ceremony tonight. It was even more low key than the opening ceremony due to COVID and budget issues. Would have loved to see some Nintendo elements included as well.

Hopefully the opening ceremony for the Paralympics will be better.

Long shot but does anyone have the package 7 put together with all the Australian Gold Medals? Think they aired it yesterday afternoon.

Yes I do. What time yesterday afternoon?

I have a non-stop archive of the coverage of the Olympic Games. Takes up a few terabytes.

I was at work mate but it would have been sometime between 12.30-3 (Sydney time). I think it had a different song for each day. Mainly focused on the swimming. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Now that the games coverage is officially over I’ll be able to update my archive website! A massive Olympics production by Seven with many presenters being involved. 90 presenters involved. Since I knew leading into the games that I would be recording this information I was able to make sure this is accurate and getting everything in the moment not trying to look back at videos to fill in my gaps like I need to do for past games. Am I missing anyone?

Wasn’t in Tokyo or part of the coverage this time around.

Sonia Kruger was meant to be part of the commentary team (as she did in Beijing) but withdrew due to filming Big Brother VIP

Nathan Templeton has written a great piece on 7news website, reflecting on his experience of covering the Tokyo Olympics.

Looking at the future tv guide. Looks like the Paralympics are getting shafted on 7mate.

Opening Ceremony on 7mate from 8:30pm live in HD.

Probably a good thing in the end :+1:t2:

Not really a surprise though is it?

Should get main channel coverage

I believe the main coverage of the Paralympics was originally meant to be on 7TWO, so moving it to 7mate is a bonus for many viewers because it means many events will be shown in HD.

So Eastern NSW, Eastern QLD, Spencer Gulf/Broken Hill, Mt Gambier, Darwin, Tasmania, Regional Victoria, and the ACT get it in SD. Yay!

Tokyo Games faceplanted to the worst result NBC has had since it started broadcasting the Summer Olympics in 1988 from Seoul, South Korea.

Focusing in on the most recent Summer Olympics, the curated primetime coverage of the Tokyo Game crashed 42% from Rio 2016, which was held from August 5-21 that year. Held a year later than planned, the Tokyo Olympics were also down 22% from the last Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, in 2018.- which is a real kick on the podium.

Looking at early numbers, the Tokyo Olympics Closing Ceremony snagged a mere 8.8 million viewers for NBC… the Closing Ceremony crashed 48% from the dancefest that was the conclusion of Rio 2016.

Sadly NBC’s ratings will probably frame these games as a mid-pandemic flop but from what I’ve seen ratings elsewhere have been quite healthy. Their ratings are more a reflection of how they cover the games than the games themselves.
