Sunrise (2015-Sept 2020)

Exactly what I thought. Another good way to give Matt Shirvington some national exposure (though he has started to present sport on the morning news in recent weeks).

I hope they don’t just take the easy route out and have Nat or Eddy (depending on who the newsreader that day is) also read the sports news, like they are doing now on Weekend Sunrise.

That’s one of their (many) points of difference over Today, a separate news and sport reader.

On another note, I wonder if Nathan Templeton is still considered a fill-in sport presenter, COVID border restrictions aside?

He hasn’t presented sport since October last year and they’ve had plenty of opportunities to utilise him as a fill-in, in particular over summer when the main team is on holidays, but instead they opted for Ryan Phelan and Matt Carmichael in the summer just gone by.

Perhaps he just wants to focus on being Melbourne Correspondent for Sunrise.

Sunrise has always been it’s own entity. When they refresh, it will be sets and all.

I reckon Eddy co-hosting and Sally Bowrey or Ange Cox on news.

That’s not a bad idea actually. Personally I’d prefer Sally Bowrey on the news, considering she’s already the newsreader on the weekend edition and is rather under-utilised at the network (only working 3 days a week).

No offence to Angela Cox, I like her, but I hope she doesn’t turn into the next Ryan Phelan where she appears on every program on the network, and she is already working a 6 day week.

Sally is probably happy doing 3 days with her having two young children it gives her a good work life balance.
When Angie Asimus returns from maternity leave Angela she won’t be doing a six day week on a permanent basis, and down the track either could be used once again as fill in if it’s required.

Who is the new Melbourne correspondent for Sunrise?

None yet - I’m guessing they’ll remain with just the one - Nathan Templeton - for the long run.

Just Nathan Templeton in Melbourne,so far no other reporter in Melbourne replacing David Woiwod.

I assume only if it’s a busy news day in Melbourne and they want a second reporter doing a live cross, then they’ll call someone in for that one-off shift.

7NEWS and Sunrise reporter Jessica Ridley appeared on the Sunrise Newsfeed this morning, has she returned from maternity leave, or was she just dropping in as a guest?

Week 32 was won by Sunrise, down slightly from the week before. News Breakfast ranked second, 55,000 lower than Sunrise with Today third a couple of thousand lower. It was fairly close across the week for second place with 2 wins each and a tie. Today was even with last week while News Breakfast rated higher.

All three continue to rate higher than the equivalent week of 2019.

With Sam and Eddy working reduced days and Nat in the anchor chair I think it would be a great opportunity to get Beretts on News/Sport if the occasion arises.

It’s refreshing seeing him in the anchor chair on WS and personally think he is better than Matt.

Are you referring to Kochie? Because I don’t think Eddy is working reduced days anymore.

When she came back from maternity leave she was initially only coming in 3 days, but she has been reading the news now for over three weeks straight, so I assume she’s gone back to 5 days a week.

He was great on Weekend Sunrise this weekend and had great chemistry with both Mon and Sally. I wonder if he’ll now be the first in-line for Matt, instead of Basil, in the long-term, as it’s probably logistically easier and cheaper than flying Basil over.

He’s a hard working man, and is now owed 4 days of leave for filling in on Weekend Sunrise the last couple of weekends, plus usual mid-year holidays, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s off for two weeks at some point.

I’d prefer it if they brought in a separate newsreader, such as Angela Cox or Monique Wright, that’s one of their points of difference to Today.

Herald Sun reports Sam Mac will connect with Victorian viewers via Zoom every day this week, as he has relatives and friends in the state. He told the paper he would promote small businesses and performers, and even host a virtual pub quiz.
This is from his Instagram last week.

Is Sam supposed to be returning tomorrow morning? Was it mentioned at the end of today’s show whether she’s coming back tomorrow?
