In regards to the discussion above, I doubt the east coast would change to the 5:00pm format due to issues surrounding the regional affiliates and smaller O&O stations (Gold Coast, Darwin, Newcastle)
Nine currently runs Nine News Local at 5:30 and if they chose to move 4pm news to 5pm, it may cause some issues surrounding the ability to produce it amongst other bulletins plus satisfying the regional networks and joint ventures. We may even see Nine News Local move to 4:30pm or even 7:00pm in SCA markets.
It will also affect areas like Darwin, Gold Coast etc as the Gold Coast bulletin also airs at 5:30pm and the handing over of the Darwin bulletin at 6:00pm NT time - which are all controlled out of QTQ.
There will need to be tons more work behind the scenes to make it happen.
Itâs only for Nine in Adelaide and Perth. Clearly Nine needs to make some changes to its schedule within these Seven dominated markets.
Nineâs 5pm bulletin seems to have taken viewers away from 10 First News in Adelaide and provided its 6pm News a better lead in. With 10 vacating these markets its now Nines gains.
It seems 9 have realised there is a market for the taking at 5pm in Adelaide and Perth, both poor performing at 6pm but an opportunity to make gains at 5pm which can translate to increases at 6pm as seen in Adelaide.
Perthâs version of the 9 News set is the best in the country as they have the TV walls and have the shear size and space available with the large studio purposely built for it.
The live and locally produced promo worked well for Nine News Adelaide because both 7 and 10 had dumped their local afternoon bulletin in favour of a hybrid bulletin interstate. You cannot just copy and paste the promo for STW because the circumstances are very different.
Iâd also suggest this time shift wonât be as âsuccessfulâ as what happened in Adelaide. The Adelaide ratings didnât really boost 6pm until a few weeks ago (and well and truly after 10 had axed their local bulletin). The rebellion against 10 isnât anywhere near as prevalent in Perth because they still have local and live news which is now presented by a more popular local anchor. Plus, 7 Perth is still there and now actually has the point of difference being first at 4pm. This change may help retention but it doesnât necessarily provide a reason yet for viewers to switch over to 9 Perth.
