I wasn’t insterested in DTV channel name listings til last year, and i’ve lived up and down a lot of the Austrailan East Coast and not really having interest in television then, my fasination has grown so much now.
I do remember Newcastle’s channels breifly in 2014;
SC10 Newcastle, PRIME Newcastle and NBN Newcastle thats about as far back as i can remember.
Love everyone to share there old DTV channels, now and then.
There was a time in Victoria when WIN on LCN 8 was just the region name. No mention of WIN in the name. This might have been pre-Media hub in about 2005-2006.
eg. Bendigo, Ballarat, Latrobe Valley etc.
At this time I think their HD loop on 80 was labelled WIN HD though.
Does 10 Darwin actually have DDT in the name? Interesting. Darwinites are probably very familiar with the DDT acronym. They should do this on Central to save precious space (10 Peach Central - South is just way too long)
Edit: Also 7mate in caps is weird. Must be the same in Tas and SA
Unfortunately when AUSTAR merged into FOXTEL in about 2012 everyone had to flick over to satellite up here. I believe myStar required satellite though.
Becasue in analogue days the area was served by Brisbane (0, 2, 7, 9) and Northern Rivers TV (ANCRN 6 and RTN 8) but there were no local relays - people had large antennas to receive Brisbane and/or NSW.
When UHF relays were introduced. the Northern Rivers station was allowed to have a relay station and when aggregation came - all three commercials were given space.
Later, when LAP were introduced, the area came under Brisbane and Northern Rivers TV services.
LCN-8 was still “Nine-NBN Central Coast” when I was there in November, so I’d presume that the channel name situation hasn’t changed on either of the metro/regional overlap coasts.
As per TV Cynic, it’s a legacy thing. Pre-aggregation, the sole regional channel was rebroadcast via the local TV translators alongside the metro stations, I guess to provide viewers with an alternative choice.
Of course these days, I agree that overlap markets should only receive one set of networks like the rest of us. Surely the Gold Coast & Central Coast (Sunshine Coast is slightly different though, since only the Southern part gets the Brisbane metros IIRC) are large enough places to support their own TV sub-markets?
At the time RTB 8 provided a local news services for Northern Rivers that included Gold Coast reports. Plus the signal from 6 and 8 was stronger than the Brisbane signals in the southern part of the coast - especially for 7 and 9 as there was potential for interference with stations on 6, 7, 8 and 9.
So it was hard to say that the area should be allocated to just one of the markets as it was almost a 50/50 situation with respect to signal strength at least.
Cobar is another overlap market as it has 7 Central and Prime7, as confirmed by @SamuelGS within the past couple of years, along with Imparja and 10 Central.
