Now this is NOT a Classic TV Guide, unless being printed about 12 hours ago qualifies as a “Classic”! But I couldn’t find anywhere else to post this! (Mods feel free to move if there is somewhere more relevant).
I bought todays “Newcastle Herald” for the first time in a while, and noted some interesting aspects of branding in todays TV Guide (image further below).
Prime7 has been changed to SEVEN, but NBN still hasn’t been changed to NINE, even though that changed on air 7 years ago now.
Daytime bulletins are branded on 7 and 10, but not NBN/Nine, only their evening bulletins are branded
7 News Local and 7 News @ 6.30 both appear in the listing, neither of which is shown in Newcastle.
HD channel numbers are not listed for 7 or 10.
Sydney variations not listed. They did this in the 90s and maybe even 00s as well, but not sure when they stopped that.
I noticed that Channel 9/WIN WA shown the NRL during the late night after the Melbourne 2006 Broadcast. In NSW and QLD, Channel 9 would broadcast the Rugby League match during primetime. (Therefore, NSW and QLD viewers would miss out a few hours of the Melbourne 2006 broadcast). In WIN territory, they broadcasted the news at 11PM. I wonder whether WIN had Nine or TEN news during late Night.
An interesting schedule with Channel 7 (instead of Channel 10) broadcasting the Easter Monday match between Kangaroos v Essendon. Instead of the ‘Kangaroos’, the NMFC have changed their name to ‘North Melbourne’. The North Melbourne name returned for the first time since 1998.
Over on Channel Ten, they broadcasted the Stawell Gift Athletics Race. IIRC, Peter Donegan commentated the race.
I’m guessing that weekend an Eagles or Dockers game was shown on 10 instead of the Sunday game being shown on 7 but that would be a guess. Basically the rights packages were the same as 2002-2006 substituting Channel 9 for Channel 7.
whereas Nine had two Sunday games (1:10pm was live on the east coast, and the 2:10pm game was condensed for a 4:00pm broadcast to lead into the 6:00pm news), Seven only had one (the Sunday 2:10pm match which was delayed by one hour in Melbourne, but live in Sydney and Brisbane unless the Swans or Lions were playing in the 1:10pm match, which Foxtel assumed).
In the years Ten showed the Grand Final, Seven televised the Brownlow, and vice versa (this occurred in the alternating years of the 2007-11 period).
Twice, the Brisbane Lions had two Friday night matches in consecutive years against Collingwood; the first one went head to head with the NRL Broncos vs Cowboys derby. In 2011, the Swans had a Friday night match against Carlton (broadcast on 7TWO IIRC due to the Royal Wedding taking precedence on Seven).
I assume that is why most of these interstate games were shown on Ten, as they showed AFL in NRL states LIVE IIRC while Seven/Nine aired it delayed. I am pretty sure it changed in 2011 with 7mate airing Seven games LIVE but Ten aired it LIVE on the main channel until they lost rights.
I also think back in the noughties the Swans requested not to be scheduled on Friday nights due to the potential loss of ratings to Nine’s NRL coverage.
Though at least twice since 2012, the Swans have outdrawn two NRL matches being played in Sydney on the same Friday evening (once in August 2014 when they played Essendon, plus the Buddy 1000 match last year).
