Binge

Foxtel boss Patrick Delaney has signalled streaming services Binge and Kayo will soon be bundled into a single offering. Foxtel Group staff are said to be working on the launch and branding of the product.

“Yes [they’ll come together]. I think the future of our aggregation is that slowly the market moves towards the aggregation of Kayo and Binge under a new aggregated brand name (sic),” he said. “The more streaming services there are, the more strain there’ll be on wallets.”-SMH.

Delaney has also stated he expects HBO/Warner Bros to launch a streaming service in Australia. This will likely result in the removal of popular premium product from Foxtel’s subscription TV and Binge streaming offerings. Foxtel’s supply agreement with HBO/Warner expires in late 2023. Warner Bros Discovery, operators of HBO Max and Discovery+ in the US, is expected to roll out a single paid service to Asia- Pacific consumers by mid 2024.

I’d love to have HBO Max out here but if they want it to be successful they need to call it Warner Bros Max or something. The HBO name doesn’t mean much here.

Disagree. Foxtel uses the HBO brand in marketing, “the home of HBO”, and I’ve associated it with premium drama and comedy specials since before the streaming era dawned. I still sometimes let out a “SHHH-OOOHM” when I see the ident pop up. It’ll be interesting to see what name they come up with when they marry HBO Max and Discovery+ brands.

Having explored the HBO Max offering I found it really disappointing. I’d subscribe for the premium scripted content but not for the really bad slate of Max Originals that were commissioned. There wasn’t one show amongst that lot that I felt compelled to explore.

Foxtel seems to zig when the rest of the industry zags when it comes to streaming…

Wonder if they’re going to launch here before they untangle the mess they’ve got in the US

As a service it probably doesnt, but as a source of content, its definitely a known entity.

I’ve just had Binge clarify the commercial situation for me:

We are pleased to let you know that there is no change to your BINGE subscription this year following today’s announcement. From 2023 there will be advertising-supported options on BINGE, and there will also remain ad-free viewing options for all customers. We will keep you informed of any future changes to your subscription. For now, we hope you keep enjoying bingeing on the world’s best shows.

This has always been known, there was some original confusion because of the way they sold it at their upfronts and subsequent reporting by some media, but there’s no way they would have introduced ads on existing plans.

Doesn’t really clarify anything.

Because ads are coming NEXT year

Hmmm

So your current subscription could change … maybe by getting ads put on it … or the price going up to remain ad-free…

Doesn’t seem too much confusion to me now in the way they’ve pitched it as ‘launching to an in-built audience’ and ‘immediate access’, ‘buyers will not have to wait for an audience to accumulate’.
Not sure how else they might achieve that…

Don’t bet on it.

I’m pretty sure Binge are just doing what Netflix are doing and creating a cheaper ad supported version. In other words it will be optional.

Of course it will be optional. You either pay the current price and get ads, or pay more to stay ad-free.
It should be noted Disney+'s new ad tier in the US will be the price of the current ad-free tier. The ad-free price is increasing. This is more likely what Binge will follow - except they won’t just automatically increase your price - you will get the ads first and you can change/increase your plan if you want to get rid of them again.
