what would be in it for 9?
Timeslot consistency for national advertising. I doubt they will pursue this line, especially with cost cutting and the possibility that at some point Nine is likely to change the delivery of NBN 9 News
for like 1 show? Doesnât seem worth it for them.
The argument for it would be 7 Regional in QLD/NSW/Vic doing it.
The argument would be cost of delivery vs possible additional revenue for Win and Nine
Nine likely attempted to secure a full SCA-style affiliation arrangement with WIN, but Gordon seemed to push back hard against it.
Take the Nine News Tasmania proposal as an example. Nine wanted to launch a fully network-branded bulletin, produced out of an upgraded WIN studio and fronted by a WIN presenter. To make it work, Nine offered WIN a 50/50 cost split. From Nineâs perspective, Tasmania could have been the test case for reviving something similar to the former Nine News Local model across other WIN regionsâessentially expanding local news coverage without bearing the full financial burden.
But negotiations broke down. Gordon walked away, insisting Nine should cover all associated costs. Because of that stalemate, the deal collapsed, and WIN News continues to operate today largely because WIN refused to give Nine partial control under a shared-cost model.
In short: Nine saw a pathway to rebuild local news at scale; WIN saw a network trying to offload costs. Neither side budged, so nothing changed.
While it definitely sounds plausible that WIN walked away over cost squabbles, do we know thatâs what happened?
Local MP Helen Dalton mentioned the latest news on WIN on her Facebook page. Maybe she read the Riot Act to them?
I think the new Nine News Darwin format is the future for regional news and expect more of it to come around the networks.
So why is WIN announcing a return of a Mildura news bulletin when itâs really a news bulletin with most Bendigo stories?
As people have established its not really a news bulletin specific for Mildura more like the bulletin is now including more specific mentions of the area in weather forecasts etc and if applicable more local stories would be included if they match the more generic stories that WIN News present in other Victorian regions. It makes sense even though not having journalist specific to the region is a let down.
Exactly. What a waste of time and money. At this rate, shouldâve just stuck with the Bendigo bulletin outright if providing another Bendigo bulletin was all WIN was going to do for the Mildura region apart from local weather at the end. Mildura is still being ignored by WIN regardless of if they bring a bulletin back to the region.
Seven does a way better job at providing local news for Mildura and the Sunraysia, Seven should be the ones that have a local bulletin, not just as short noodle updates that are currently being provided.
WIN News was once The Voice of Country Victoria, but not really anymore.
More like now back to being The Voice of Wollongong. Lol.
There is almost no additional cost to run a Mildura bulletin. Theyâre simply creating a rundown to air in that market w/ localised graphics
A hybrid of noodle updates and a bulletin with wider general interest content, if you will. Or a hybrid noodle update-all Australian news. Not a bad way to do things in the current climate, all things considered - provides some local connection with the power of a full bulletin.
From what I believe that happens for the whole state, for example one VIC bulletin is produced but branded as six, therefore you use the resources and cost of running one whilst meeting the local quota requirements for each market. Likely wouldnât cost much more as I believe most newsrooms only have 1 journalist + 1 camera operator.
Sarah Cawte is leaving WIN News on Friday 12 December. Bo Jeong will replace her as Weather Presenter.
Sad to see Sarah go, but huge congratulations to Bo on being named the new weather presenter
Not sure how long itâs been there, but in the title card for the Illawarra bulletin, a building on the right of the logo was blurred out. It covered the WIN News logo slightly.
Confirmation of the changes at WIN.
Oh my God. After about 4 years we have a change as Weather Anchor.
yeah, as reported above.
