WIN News

But where’s mappy? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

They are also running the “Years of Local News” type promo in Victoria now as well.

WIN News have their local news room staffed today and are providing some really comprehensive updates out of it as Cyclone Debbie closes in.

With the SEWS??

I hope they’re doing Shepparton versions as well… given that they’ve been doing local news for that region for 55 years. Be a shame if they’re just going to lump Shepparton in with the “20 years” in Albury promos.

And since when did the Shepparton and Albury sub-markets become one, anyway. They were clearly separate regions pre-aggregation.

In times like these (Cyclone Debbie) do we think WIN News and 7 News (QLD) should be doing live bulletins for the affected coastal areas of Queensland with coverage, specialized weather, warnings and updates?

These stations should swing into action with live updates during Today / Sunrise - and at least a special bulletin at perhaps 4pm and again at 1030pm

And now I prefer WIN News after the “Local” 9 news introduction, it completely replaces national 9 news, and it’s hardly even “local”. I miss Peter Hitchener

When Southern Cross Network began in 1992 Shepparton and Albury they were regarded as the one sub-market I remember seeing lots of Albury ads on the Shepparton station. Although Shepp had an optout at 6pm to show “Studs” and the second (national news) half of “Southern Cross Eyewitness News” (the first half were local bulletins in Bendigo and Gippsland) while Albury carried the Sydney Ten Eyewitness News. Both Albury and Shepparton SCN stations used the GLV ACMA callsign. VIC TV/WIN and oddly enough Prime (given its Albury origins) regarded Shepparton as a separate sub-market.

What has happened to Paul Taylor? I see Sophie Ryan doing nightly updates so frequently in the past two months.

Ballarat and shepparton s win just the once license

I know I’m in the minority (I often am on MS) but I think with WIN Corp buying the Ten affiliate NRN TV station serving Northern NSW, we will see WIN launch local news into the broadcast area.

A few reasons:

  • NNSW is the 4th largest TV market in Oz with 1.9 million people - after SYD, MEL and BNE
  • In the largest Sub-market - Newcastle (810,000 people) there is only 1 station with local news - NBN
  • I think WIN will want to win local news in the areas as a “prestige” thing - with key cities like Newcastle and Gold Coast, even if the service runs at a loss - there is benefit and prestige in being able dos ay they have local news in Newcastle and Gold Coast
  • After Nine launched local news into WIN’s heartland (Wollongong) I think WIN will want to get even launching local news into NBN’s hometown (Newcastle)
  • Perhaps all 6 local sub markets may not get local news - but I definitely see Gold Coast, Newcastle and North Coast getting a local news at 6.
  • WIN will be able to launch the fact they have launched new local news as a bargaining chip with the Govt to help get media reform through in Canberra

I think there’s a reasonable chance of it. While most business are run based on what’s good for business and will turn a profit, WIN is run based on ego and emotion - both of which will have a desire to offer local news to as many people as possible.

Also WIN has no obligation to shareholders unlike basically every other broadcaster in Australia.

It’s prob a couple of million to set up - and perhaps 2 million a year to run.

Nine spend about that alone on their Gold Coast News annually.

WIN News won’t rate on a “regional” channel on the Gold Coast. It’s channel position, timeslot, hokey format and pre-recorded format (if it’s recorded on the Sunshine Coast or Newcastle) won’t simply fly. Not up against the strength of Seven and Nine.

May have a better chance in Newcastle if it’s live and not “small town” outlook. Maybe pull Ray Dinneen out of retirement? It would take at least a decade to chip away on any audience. Perhaps WIN would take a “cheap” option and present it out of Wollongong, which wouldn’t pass mustard with the locals.

As for the other NNSW sub-markets, Prime7 and NBN have already carved away the news audience.

I agree it wouldn’t rate on the Gold Coast up against Seven and Nine.

But as the only local news in primetime at 6 - it would get something

I’m not suggesting WIN would launch news on goal coast with the intention of beating Seven and Nine - more for the prestige.

I would’ve thought that NBN News with it’s local content windows would (somewhat) count as a 6pm news bulletin for the Gold Coast, even if it’s produced in Newcastle and on delay for six months of the year…
