WIN News

Are Modern Family repeats on Saturday and a brand new episode of Family Feud on Sunday more important than a local bulletin? WIN should have seen this coming when negotiating a new affiliation deal with Ten.

Thanks Aurora

That there is what you call bullshitting to your loyal viewers if Iā€™m not mistaken Moe. :stuck_out_tongue:

WIN are just showing how really dedicated they are to informing their viewers with a quality news service 7 nights a week. Much like their new partners in Ten are. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Fairfax reports that WIN News ratings have taken a hit in Canberra and country Victoria after the affiliation switch.

The article actually talks about WINs overall ratings taking a hit - but nothing in the article refers to win news rating less at 6 than it did at 7

so you missed the second para then?

And Prime7 has claimed No. 1 spot in Canberraā€™s nightly news battle as the ratings show WINā€™s local news bulletin falling behind both of its commercial rivals in its first week in the new timeslot of 6pm.

Figures supplied by Prime7 show that its relay of the Mark Ferguson-hosted Sydney bulletin of Seven News averaged xxx ahead of National Nine News and the all-local bulletin of WIN News.

Admin: Reginal ratings numbers removed

I read that, but it doesnā€™t say what win news was getting at 7 - so we donā€™t know if itā€™s actually dropped.

or a pre-recorded outro to be sent out to WIN stations.

Why? These numbers are a direct quote of the articleā€¦not from regional TAM directly.

As per terms of agreement with ratings data provider, quoting of ratings (not in metro top 20) from other sources is specifically prohibited.

According to the Border Mail article that was linked in the ā€œWIN Televisionā€ thread, Wollongong is the only market where WIN News is #1 in its new 6pm timeslot instead of #3 in all other markets across Southern NSW/ACT & Regional VIC. Iā€™d imagine in all Regional QLD markets, Seven Local News is #1 by a considerable margin ahead of Nine News & WIN News.

With the above in mind, if in the worse case scenario WIN axes its full local news bulletins if they continue to rate at 3rd place behind Seven News & Nine News, I think the Wollongong bulletin will the only one left remaining.

I agree. There would probably be quite a fair bit of backlash if WIN News Illawarra were to be axed, so much so that I donā€™t think the network would ever be able to recover if they abandoned their ā€œhome regionā€.

In any case, it is rather interesting how WIN News at 6pm is so far outrating the Sydney news bulletins on Prime7 and SCA Nine in Wollongong. Personally I suspect that having a popular, longserving local presenter in Geoff Phillips (who has been a part of WIN News in the Illawarra for decades now, if Iā€™m not mistaken) helps WINā€™s ratings more than anything else.

Iā€™d agree.
Iā€™m only speculating here, but from my experience with news here in Regional QLD, Iā€™d say 7 Local News would well and truly be #1 by a large margin, and Iā€™d actually think WIN News is probably still #2 for the time being.

I donā€™t think WIN News will stay #2 for very long, but Iā€™d definitely speculate that for the time being, it likely takes out the #2 spot here in my opinion.

Surely WIN need to freshen up the look and feel of the bulletin. It is still very much stuck in the 90s.
Sex it up a bit in terms of set, graphics and flow. More chat with sport and weather presenters. No ā€œthanks for watching WIN Television.ā€

Fasten the pace a bit, it is now competing with the big boys.

ABC News Canberra is a much better news than WINā€™s. And there is no fluff in the ABC News like kiddies and suburban sport stories that really should be restricted to the free local newspaper.

I think WIN really needs to look at the format of their newscasts.

The ratings for Canberra, Ballarat and Bendigo quoted in various articles show that overwhelmingly viewers in these cities prefer to watch composite type news bulletins at 6 - that is state, national and international news.

For WIN, the idea of having to sit through 60 minutes of ten news at 5, then 30 minutes of win news at 6ā€¦ To get the days storiesā€¦no one has that time.

even the 30 minute ā€œlocalā€ news at stations in the us have the dayā€™s biggest national state international and local stories. All be it with a local focus.

Win needs to overhaul the 6pm news to include the biggest stories of the day - be they local or national - plus local weather. They need to work with Ten to include stories from 5pm. They need to tap into Tenā€™s live reporter crosses. They need to work WITH ten. And win news at 6 needs to become like an Adelaide or Darwin bulletin. Local focus - but also includes the biggest national stories or the day

And these bulletins need to be brought into 2016. Even viewers in smaller cities like Bendigo are showing overwhelmingly they want a slick fast paced news at 6 - not this hokey local format from the 1990s

They are now up against the marketing muscle and social media presence of the big boys 7 and 9 have hours of news across the day to push into 6pm. Win news is Looking like an awkward island at 6 - with no marketing muscle or dayside news to push audiences to 6

Like you said - they are competing with the big boys now

Arenā€™t all the bulletins pre-recorded?

Yes, they are.
Most would be pre-recorded before TEN News has even aired.

Probably best to start doing live news 6-630 for each state (QLD, NSW, Vic) and do a pre record 10 minute local window in each one.

Part of the reason these bulletins are so flat and dull - is they are not live. They feel taped, magazine - and slow in pace.

Having a faster paced live news would really help the overall feel
