Wide World of Sports

in Sydney we get the epic rugby league grand final

League or Union? Be specific.

Rugby is shorthand for Rugby Union. League is shorthand for Rugby League.

Melburnians only say that when the Storm have been eliminated. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yep
Nine should have given Sports Sunday a miss in the southern state and extended the AFL footy show. Especially when Nine continues to lose in Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.

That’s nice. I really do not care about any of it.

I would say most wouldn’t haven’t even realised.

To be fair, the Sunday Footy Show AFL hosts might’ve appreciated the extra hour sleep-in after daylight saving took effect overnight, not to mention they would’ve been at the Grand Final yesterday so probably needed the rest. And it’s also Tony Jones’ 60th birthday.

Doesn’t The Sunday Footy Show usually finish the week before the grand final?

Don’t know about the NRL version but the AFL version usually finishes the day after the Grand Final, as is the case today, on air from 11am-1pm.

Sports Sunday is on every Sunday, today’s episode obviously has a greater NRL flavour since it’s Grand Final Day and Nine is showing the game live nationally on the main channel everywhere in prime time, so naturally they’re wanting to promote it.

The Sunday Footy Show AFL follows Sports Sunday in the AFL states and goes for 2 hours, so overall I think Nine is perfectly justified in their scheduling with this.

Tony Jones is 62

The internet is wrong. It was confirmed on Nine News the other night that TJ was born in 1963.

They moved the production forward an hour so they could interview Collingwood players and broadcast their presentation to fans at Olympic Park scheduled for 12:30pm.

Tony is 60

This mornings show is the final show for 2023.

Showcasing the week and year in review. And the “Sports Sunday Awards” are given out too, from moments of the year, to player and team of the year (etc).

It appears that “Sports Sunday” has had a name change. It has been reverted back to the name “Wide World Of Sports”. Going by online guides and in print (TV Week). It returns this Sunday at 10am. It will probably move to a later slot in AFL cities next week when the AFL Footy Show returns. Roz Kelly is listed as host.

If correct, i wonder why the name change? Then again, this show was called Wide World Of Sports until 2016, when Ken Sutcillfe retired.

I think they did it to differentiate the WWOS production banner from the show

I think it was just a case of exchanging/interchanging one brand with another. Originally, “Wide World of Sports” as a program was typically associated with Saturday afternoons and rarely aired on a Sunday, whereas the original “Sports Sunday” was more interview-centric. The original format of the Sunday morning revival was essentially the “Sports Sunday” format rebadged as “Wide World of Sports.” Nine changed the name to better reflect the format of the program and in doing so revived another brand in the process.

Probably because the format has slowly reverted back to what WWOS was. Originally, Sports Sunday was an hour long version of the Sunday Serve segment on WWOS, a panel show where they debated the hot issues in sports during the week (essentially a poor imitation of something like First Take). Over the years, the show has mellowed out, especially after Fitzy left. Now it is more of a round up of the week in sport, with longer form segments and interviews with athletes.

Plus, as greenpea mentioned, it relaunches the WWOS brand in time for the Paris games.

Oh yes, you do make some good points there.

Now i remember the show being more of a discussion show (when Fitzy was there), but is now more of a recap sports show, and showing some interviews. It’s still a good show in recent times, but i preferred the discussion version slightly better.

Wide World of Sports is back for 2024. Sports Sunday is no more.
