Watermarks

Don’t let WIN see this and get any ideas! :joy:

There were a few they missed/couldn’t cover up, such as at 2:20 with the wipe.

Yeah, that one I think they let go to the keeper, otherwise you’d miss the action as they quickly came back from the replay. So there was some thought put into it.
Anything else I put down to technology and resources of the day; this was back when Fox Footy were using 10’s graphics package, for example, which I think is where the spinning AFL wipe came from.

I think these AFL masters (majority analogue?) with the original broadcaster’s watermark remained until around 2006, from around 2007 (with the new deal) Seven and Ten’s games at least were watermarkless when their rival’s appeared on theirs during news sport reports of footy talk shows, same when encored on Fox Sports. Probably also coinciding with digital, widescreen and HD starting to take full effect. You can still see evidence of all of this today when Seven show footage from Ten’s (2002-2006 and 2007-2011 packages), their own various packaged or when Foxtel show any.

Although I did notice one of the early 2000s GFs with the Lions managed to have Ten’s watermark missing (like a completely clean/new sourced feed - AFL Films?) when Seven aired it a few months ago on GF eve as part of the overnight ‘marathon’, which I thought was surprising and commented at the time.

My understanding is the AFL have ‘clean’ versions (e.g. no network watermarks) of every match from the 2002 broadcast deal onwards in their archives, but anything before that has the 7 logo as far back as 1996. A quick look at AFL Classics on Kayo seems to back this up.

As to why networks would show a ‘dirty’ feed instead? Probably some Australian equivalent of ‘fair use’ that people have figured out. I remember when the Footy Show wouldn’t dare to show any AFL/Ch7 footage, now they run analysis on Fox Footy clips every Sunday like it’s nothing.

7 must have some clean versions of games from that era. The 1997 Grand Final was shown here in Adelaide during the Grand Final marathon last year. Lost the scorebug along with the watermark and added hideous grey bars at some stage.

Oh I’m sure Ch 7 does, but that’s not what they gave the AFL to put in the archive.

Because they have a deal in place with Fox to get and use any footage they want as long as they credit Fox.

I’m surprised that Seven still use the 2016-19 watermark for NBC Today and I think The Morning Show. Why does Seven still use it?

Because it fits and so they are keeping it.

A good concept would be to have the current Seven logo and drop the 7plus,com,au and have the positioning of the watermark the same used 2016-19. Here are 2 examples I made that are virtually the same (excuse the grey bars on the top and bottom:
