Watermarks

As I mentioned a few days ago, it’s a similar situation to the late shows - they record the dirty feed in order to turn it around faster. It’s just an old fashioned procedure.

Seeing as 10 are also owned by CBS, I doubt they’re in any hurry to change the procedure to remove the branding.

No CBS watermark during the NZ airing of the Oprah interview:

What’s that logo in the top right?

Looks like + H R = E or something?

Yep. That’s their logo… as weird as it is.

Ah thanks, didn’t realise they had changed their name.

Wished more Australian networks had more subtle watermarks like that one.

It’s nice but I would hate to be the graphic designer working with the THREE logo. It’s a really unique shape and really hard to work with. It would be difficult to do things like this -

Imagine trying to create news graphics with that mess of a logo. Thank god for Newshub.

I agree it’s not a great logo, I was more referring to it being smaller and less intrusive than most for a watermark.

Correct. It was reported in The Australian on Monday that ViacomCBS when negotiating the licencing gave a strict set of requests that must be abided. And you could clearly see them (e.g.) embedded ad break bumpers from Harpo, the program description, promos with credits, social media with credits. All of which were mentioned and indeed occurred.

Wonder why ITV was CBS watermark free then?

Adjusted for population and viewership/ revenue - 10 Paid far more than ITV

The encore on tonight clearly taking the piss now when it comes to watermarks.

Fair enough.

That suggests disaster recovery resources were in use.

Yes part way through tonight’s encore of the interview 10 glitched for a fraction of a second and was then in SD recovery mode.

Which is very appropriate as WINs watermark/logo is a disaster itself.

WHY have solid Mappy as a watermark on one day and then as a blue circle on another day? Makes no sense. They have NO consistency when it comes to a station logo.

The blue circle is used during Ten’s disaster recovery as it is a dirty feed.

Edit: from Bort’s post in Ten Network - Programs and Schedules:

You will see the WIN circle is aligned with the Ten. Ten just moved theirs up for the interview, hence why it is out of place in the attached image.

It isn’t just used to cover up dirty feeds.

The blue circle logo is often used in promos too.

So it’s not just a watermark issue.

That is not an “issue” and irrelevant to what we are discussing.

Why do they need to do cover-ups? It impacts on the viewer experience when they should be trying to get as many viewers as possible. They should have the words “Win” above the Ten logo in small text so people in cross markets like the central coast and gold Coast so they can quickly distinguish between the stations. That’s all that’s required and it was sufficient for years in the 90s and early 00s when stations first had watermarks. Win had a small dotty logo in the top right. Having two Win mappy logos on screen is completely unnecessary.

If I was living in a Win area I would watch it on Ten Play’s live stream, which they want to avoid people doing. Doing the above just encourages people to do just that. Everyone in regional Australia knows that Win is a Ten affiliate so stop kidding themselves that they are a independent station. It really is stupid behaviour I hope Nine buys them so regional Australia can get proper service.
