A caveat that I can’t read the article, but if the editor is being offered voluntary redundancy they probably won’t be able to replace him with an editor or the like legally for quite some time.
Will likely be someone overseeing multiple titles or with a changed role name/duties.
Does make sense that they wont replace the editor, unless its someone who oversees multiple magazines/titles, or someone with or who may have a few various roles/duties within TV Week.
I wonder if it will be as early as tomorrow’s issue that we find out?
Yes it is Home and Away again which is why I thought it wasn’t worth mentioning. An ugly photo again too from a scene in the show. The actress has wet hair and you can’t even tell who it is.
Thomas Woodgate has done his regular editor’s column and talked about the cancellation. He says they’ll be working hard in 2021 to bring us a bigger awards show next year that encompasses this past year and next year. Maybe not all of them, it would seem.
I guess the column was written before there was any announcement. Or whatever is happening behind the scenes may be something that will never be talked about anyway.
Wonder if we could eventually see TV Week inside New Idea or something as a liftout instead of a while magazine. Something encompassing everything entertainment and celebrity? No idea about circulation just an idea.
Either way it may be time to start looking for a new owner of the Logies, or better yet an organisation or academy of sorts to oversee it.
I think it’s more likely that Bauer will just replicate what they did in NZ on a larger scale in Australia. Maybe not a full pull-out, but I can totally see all titles that they deem unprofitable in the long term getting axed (I expect TV Week is one of these).
TV Week apparently still does well all things considered, though it sells a fraction of the copies it did in its hey day, though the same can be said of any of the major titles
And if TV Soap can survive all these years with a tiny proportion of copies sold, I can’t see why TV Week can’t. They may have to cut back some features in the future but as long as it still makes a profit, it could be around for a long time to come.
In Greece where they have a population (11 million) less than half of Australia’s population, they still have 8 weekly TV mags. They had even more in the past. Some of them have mainly a program guide and not as many TV stories as TV Week, but those retail much cheaper. Others have special features like croszwords, puzzles and cooking. Much like a That’s Life or Take 5 mag.
TV show
TV 24
My TV
TiVi serial
7 Meres TV (7 Days TV)
Teleorasi (Television)
Teletheatis (Televiewer)
Tilerama (Telewatching)
If they can do that with their shattered economy, I can’t see why we can’t have one magazine remaining into the future.
the UK still has quite a large TV magazine market. I believe Radio Times and TV Times are the dominant players but there are a number of cheaper titles still going IIRC. While the UK has the scale of population on its side, it shows the TV magazine sector still has some life in it.
Always amazes me that this one has survived for so long. I think i bought a copy once in its early days but never since.
We also had Soap World in Australia. I just googled it and see they haven’t updated their Facebook page since August last year so I guess they quietly shut down?
Yes. I bought a copy of each when I was in the UK last year:
Radio Times
TV Times
What’s on TV
TV Choice
TV and Satellite Week
Total TV Guide
They also have:
All About Soap
Inside Soap
Entertainment Weekly
I see TV Soap at the Newsagents too, and am also surprised that it is still there. I’ve seen Soap World in 2019, but to be honest, I don’t know if that still exists either.
If several TV related magazines exist in countries like Greece, then I can’t see TV Week disappearing from Australia anytime soon. I understand the UK having various tv-related magazines, as they do produce more shows than us.
I can see TV Week lasting for the time being, and I guess to TV Soap also. Do we have enough for more “tv-based-magazines”? Probably not in this climate. There is only one Movie Magazine in Aus too - Empire, and until recently, Inside Film magazine was there too (not sure if that still exists)?
Radio Times has a special offer at the moment in the UK
For the next 12 weeks, we will deliver your copy of Radio Times direct to your door, for the usual price you pay in the shop – with no delivery charge.
This week’s edition is 148 pages which is considerably larger than TV Week but it does include a comprehensive radio guide. Also there are a lot of other topics covered like gardening, money, travel, books etc. In the guide section each day covers 5 pages.
