That will seem to mean the end of the Saturday morning sports program We Was Robbed hosted by HG Nelson and Chris Taylor on Kinderling Kids Radio. Roy Slaven has filled in for Taylor a few times during the year.
Ah Triple M, the place to go for all your favourite Classic RockâŚOh that would be Classic Rock Digital⌠oh wait, I mean Pandora!
Wonder what that means for the various editions of âDead Set Legendsâ which air on Saturday mornings? Doubt the show would be cancelled due to its long heritage in Sydney but it seemed like a perfect fit for that time of the weekend.
And in Melbourne too. It seems strange to have a national sports show that canât focus on AFL too much be the lead in to the AFL when it starts at 12.
I also wonder if it will be live of pre-recorded. Iâd lean towards live for that time of day, but itâs going to have to be a bit generic sounding still to work the following morning on the regionals.
It will be disappointing if the DSL gets axed - I quite enjoy listening to the Sydney version
Kerry Oâkeefe, Michael Slater, James Brayshaw, Brad Haddin, Brett Lee are all part of Triple Mâs coverage which will also include Lawrence Mooney, Gus Worland, Neroli Meadows as well as HG Nelson.
Not a bad line up.
Was just about right with some of my predictions.
Merv Hughes, Brad Haddin, Darren Berry and former England womenâs cricketer Isa Guha complete the cricket commentary line-up.
Agree with the sentiments about the line up - you would think Brayshaw & OâKeefe would be the âmainâ pairing with Slater & maybe Guha being the other âplay-by-playâ (for lack of a better term) commentators.
It will be interesting to see how the comedians are incorporated whether theyâre simply involved in the pre/post game + breaks segments or theyâre going to have them actually commentating to add âcolourâ to the âtraditionalâ call
Triple m more sport talk, nrl afl & now cricket why in such a big country there is very little choice in a decent rock station yes classic rock digital was great until they suddenly axed it .
I just donât understand that in 2016 triple m the original rock station plays sport, talk & more sport & talk yes I do here some rock music with a few token classics
In nz thereâs 3 rock network stations hauraki plays alt/modern rock , the rock plays 80s to todayâs modern rock then the sound totally classic rock no sport & mindless talk on any of the nz rock stations .
Rebel fm would be the best rock variety station in Australia I have listened to
Having purchased an internet radio recently I have been spoilt for choice in the different rock variety stations etc available worldwide.
Sadly Australia is very limited for real choice in a truly national rock music network .
Triple m what does it stand for Absolutely nothing.
Triple M is pretty much aimed at male sport loving bogans these days, isnât it? Thatâs the impression that I seem to get from all their marketing and promotion, especially for Sydneyâs âThe Grill Teamâ breakfast show.
Absolutely agree. Itâs a complete joke there is no music-focused rock station in Australiaâs capital cities, not even on Digital Radio now. How did it come to this in this country? How does the UK, US, Canada and NZ have actual rock music stations on FM and Australia doesnât? Itâs just pathetic. There has to be something inherently wrong with the way radio is regulated and/or allocated in this country for this situation to exist.
rock, sport and comedy. And itâs a huge #1 for men, soâŚ
more stations, more frequencies made available, much less regulation in what they have to abide by. In NZ you can get 30+ stations on your FM band, here in Australia we must abide by the .8 gap⌠canât have a .4 like all the big centres. Canât have more competition, thatâs not what ARN, SCA or DMG want or need⌠gotta keep Murdoch and the other bigwigs happy.
Looks like triple m are again trying to national brand the network, same music, same shows, same talk in all markets. This would have to be the 5th time they have tried this and failed every time. Classic triple m was starting to get an improvement in the ratings. Ever since they dropped the classic, 3 ratings periods ago it has once again dropped. Do they ever learn at SC???
When you read this thread it becomes obvious what Triple M should do to increase its ratings - in Sydney anyway:
- play more non-stop rock music
- dump the bogan blokey sound
- play more non-stop rock music
- drop the sports coverage
- play more non-stop rock music
- drop the sports shows
- play more non-stop rock music
Do what smooth does but with rock music.
Itâs much cheaper and - on the weekend at least - more non stop rock music would rate higher than the current 3.8% There is a stack of men and women who just want rock.
Just rock music.
Itâs aimed at blue collar men. Most blue collar men love sport, it does well with men but for me the issue is the music. The music is the same stuff all the time, the same 90âs and new stuff with common 80âs from chisel ACDC etc. needs more variety in what they play. Widen the playlist whilst trying to say as Rock as possible. The content they have is fine but itâs the music played. The amount of revenue made from the sport coverage is incredible. You also factor in a lot if people will watch the footy on tv or go to the game.
If there were two or three rock stations in Sydney I would understand that one of them would narrow their target market to blue collar men. Or over 40s. OrâŚ
But as Triple M is the only rock station I donât get why they target such a narrow part of the Sydney market.
Why alienate women, white collar men or everyone who loves rock but could not care for a sport like cricket.
This narrow target market of blue collar men has a side-effect. Triple M rates 3.8 on the weekend. Triple J rates a 5.7.
If I open an ice cream store at Bondi - I aim it at everyone. Not women who are lactose intolerant.
Why not aim the only rock station in Sydney at anyone - anyone - who likes rock music?
Understand your point but I look at the overall market. Rock is a single genre of music so realistically you are at a disadvantage compared to age group rival WS and the CHR stations. So instead of attacking the market overall which to most is the logical option they are looking at a small corridor which is blue collar men. Could be less bogan for sure but I think the sport coverage is good for advertisers bringing in money and serves that small market they aim for. Not everyone loves footy and some just prefer to listen to music but I think the music is the problem not the coverage of sport
Surely if the footy coverage wasnât bringing in listeners and making them good dollars theyâd have well dumped it by now? It canât be cheap to pay for those AFL/NRL rights and pay for commentators, producers, equipment etc. to produce those calls on a weekly basis
