Triple M Network

Think you might need a new insider WATV.
There’s been press releases LOL

@WATV
I think I’ll buy that lotto ticket then
I like the odds of mix perth changing to Triple M.

If I’m not mistaken, Mix 94.5 is basically to Perth radio what Channel Seven is to Perth TV: A ratings powerhouse. In contrast, Triple M has had a very patchy and unsuccessful history (both on FM and Digital Radio) in Perth.

Personally I agree that they shouldn’t tamper with what works in Perth, but at the end of the day SCA management based in Sydney or Melbourne will probably have the final say on the branding of their Perth stations. Perth already has Hit 92.9 (I’d bet the decision to rebrand that station came from the other side of the country), so Triple M 94.5 will eventually happen at some point if SCA is so obsessed with rebranding all their radio stations to either Hit or Triple M.

I remember when 96fm changed to mmm a few years back it was a total disaster for 96fm

Well given that it was previously just ‘92.9’, it’s not a huge change to give an actual brand to a station that just used a frequency. If they were still actively using the PMFM brand, then a change to Hit would probably have mattered more.

Modern Rock Digital can still be Saved.

Heaven help MMM if we (Bulldogs) win the GF and Luke Darcy is left with the last seconds of the game!

It would probably become a ‘memorable’ call in some sense if his call of the final play in their prelim against GWS Giants for Seven is any indication

Triple M has become an inaugural FM broadcaster of Test Cricket in Australia after signing a 2-year deal with Cricket Australia to broadcast selected Australian Test cricket matches over the next 2 summers, starting from this coming season (2016-17). It will commence from 15th December for its capital city stations with the first day-night Test in Brisbane & from 26th December for its regional stations with the Boxing Day Test from the MCG.

Excellent! But of course they’re still the place I go to if I want a wide variety of Classic Rock right? That’s what they told me when they switched off Classic Rock Digital? So they’ll play the classic rock over the cricket? I’m confused…

Didn’t expect this! ABC will face even more competition the next two summers for test cricket coverage. This is the last thing the public broadcaster needs, with Jim Maxwell absent from this summer’s broadcast as he recovers from a stroke in August.
Who do you think will call test cricket for Triple M? I think James Brayshaw is an obvious candidate, given he had called several one-day international and Twenty20 matches for Nine. Triple M may also utilise some members of its NRL and AFL commentary team.

Triple M coverage would be more suited to the Bogan Bash. I must admit, it would be hard to top Channel 9 for low-brow cricket commentary- by far the worst in the world.

Gus Worland will be involved

will triple M really be that much competition to be honest?
the problem with broadcasting cricket on the radio is that you are trying to break a lifetime habit for people. turning on the ABC for the cricket is seen as some as just as important during summer as a trip to the beach.

i can see the coverage being boganish - things like “we cut to the makita scoreboard” and whatnot.

i would think this could extend the market for listeners to cricket on the radio. i think it wold have minimal effect on the ABC. it’s the other commercials that do cricket (NTS i think?) who would be worried.

And why only selected Tests?

Sounds like another version of its half baked NRL coverage.

In any case, I agree, they will find it difficult to compete with the iconic ABC coverage, and will peeve those listeners even more that there is no longer a Classic Rock option on DAB+ to turn to if they don’t want cricket coverage.

Will The 12th Man be part of the call team?

As tejas57 said, Triple M’s broadcasting test matches will probably extend the amount of people listening to cricket by virtue of it being available on FM instead of just on AM/DAB. While their main rival would obviously be Macquarie Radio, the coverage provided by all three outlets will be different in a way which will allow the listeners to decide which ‘style’ they prefer and hence what station to listen to.

In regards to commentators, it would make sense for JB to be their ‘lead caller’ for obvious reasons. I’m pretty sure that he was involved when Triple M broadcast some Twenty20 matches in 2008 and 2009. In regards to other commentators, apart from Ian Chappell who works for Macquarie - don’t think any of Nine’s other callers have a radio gig so some of them could be involved. In addition, there’s Brenton Jullian and Alan Border who work for Fox and some of Ten’s Big Bash commentators could be involved depending on their individual Big Bash commentating commitments.

Might be wrong but I have a strong feeling this is going to be a ‘trial’ of sorts for a bigger tilt at the broader radio rights when the current agreement with the ABC & Macquarie ends following the 2017/18 cricket season (when Triple M’s agreement also ends). The hiring of Brad McNamara is a strong indicator that they want to build something for the long-term, not just two years.

Also mark Howard would be another lead caller one would think. Chris North/Queer Pete was apart of their big bash coverage a few years back too now works fairly high up at SCA Sydney now. But you’ve also got guys working regionally who could do a job too. Interesting times ahead

Major computer problems at Triple M Sydney just after the 12pm news today.

They kept playing “Rev It Up” (Jerry Harrison & The Casual Gods) and “Keep On Running” (Spencer Davis Group) alternately for about 15 mins… When “Rev It Up” started to play for a 3rd time, that went for about 20 seconds, then 10 seconds of silence before they played “Original Sin” (INXS).

That’s not really good enough from Triple M in the middle of the day.
Someone should have fixed the problem quicker than that.
Fair enough if it was the middle of the night however.

It might be just coincidence but I’m sure some stations (I seem to recall FM104 in Brisbane) used to play “Keep On Running” when something went wrong back in the late 80s. I’m sure I remember that track being played and then fading out when they’d fixed the problem
