It does sound like Marty was just done with radio and the Matildas thing was a convenient exit.

It’s also a convenient story when he knows he’s virtually unemployable anyway.

“He’s sacked–”
“I resign!”

Maybe that’s why he’s going on a stand-up tour?

That said, “virtually unemployable” as you say, but I expect he’ll return on Have You Been Paying Attention in 2027, or even this year and he’ll be back on Fisk too. But he’s probably done with radio indefinitely.

I agree, there have been others who have been embroiled in controversy, look dead and buried, stepped away for a while and made a comeback of sorts. He probably also needs to reinvent himself somewhat.

He made his bed, shat in it, he can lay in it.

There is an audience that will go to his stand-up shows, he’ll be like a cockroach after a nuclear explosion. Like the ones going to his Sydney Comedy Festival shows (not me, I’m going to Olga Koch and Elouse Eftos  :joy:).

In hindsight, Marty should’ve never left Nova.

He was chasing the big bucks. :money_bag:

Loving 2MMM’s outdoor campaign lately.

“Sydney deserves an all local line-up”.

“Sydney deserves its own sound”.

Local line up with workdays out of Melbourne and Brisbane.

He’s always been a stand-up, the whole event was a giant overreaction. He probably needed to check out anyway he was clearly burnt out with those breaks and was becoming reckless on air.

Yes, I’ve heard promos on 104.9 having a dig at Gold’s breakfast coming out of Melbourne.

If Marty had made those comments a month earlier or a month later, I honestly think the outcome would’ve been very different. In most cases, you’d expect the standard playbook: pull him off air for a week or two, issue a carefully worded apology, maybe some “time for reflection,” and then he’s quietly back behind the mic once the heat dies down.

The issue was timing. He said it right when Triple M was clearly in cost-cutting mode. They’d just let go of Luke Bona and a number of staff and on-air talent across regional stations. The knives were already out financially. When you’re trimming budgets and looking at salaries line by line, a controversy like that stops being just a HR issue and starts looking like an opportunity.

From a corporate perspective, it probably ticked a few boxes at once. They could position it publicly as taking a stand, generate some positive PR for “drawing a line,” and at the same time remove what was likely a pretty sizeable salary from the books. If there were already concerns internally about culture or him being difficult around the office — which has been alleged — that just makes the decision easier.

I’m not saying it was entirely cynical, but the alignment of controversy + cost cutting + existing internal issues feels a bit too neat to ignore. In another financial climate, he probably survives it. In that moment, though, he became expendable.

Totally agree, wasn’t there also some Endometriosis Australia partnership launched about then too…

I suspect, like your suggesting, add bad PR for the new partnership too; Turn the oven up to 11, that goose is cooked.

I actually really liked the content he and his team produced, and wish he would do a podcast, but I suspect that won’t be delivered anytime soon via the listnr app.

This being the same station that had Mick Molloy broadcasting out of Melbourne for two years on its breakfast program.

Still had MG (Mark Geyer) in Sydney so not wholly out of Melbourne.. although CoC has been doing a few shows out out of Sydney as well.

CoC seems to have a care about his audience. He is really quite different to what we are used to

He does want to do shows elsewhere.
