As a regular listener, he gets serious about certain topics that come up, but as a comic, he regularly exaggerates or says things he clearly doesn’t mean sarcastically. He does it to callers “no foreigners” etc. But he’s also been doing it long enough not to get into Kyle’s territory.
What’s happened is someone who makes videos to get attention for a living has highlighted one clip on its own for traction, and it’s working, and it’s everything that’s wrong with modern media. I’ve seen the news.com.au article already which has just copied her post, and wrongly attributed quotes to Troy Ellis in it. Just sloppy, lazy, fast turnaround click and anger bait. It’s all so tiring.
You’re out of line here. Being supposed comedy doesn’t stop something be hateful and nasty too. What you’re doing is deflecting from the main issue by attacking those reporting on it. Discrediting the witnesses when we can all hear what was said in the audio.
The fact is he should firstly be pulled up on referring to a professional sports team as a much of school kids. It diminishes the effort of the athletes. At the very least it’s tone deaf about a team which as proven to be popular and much loved in Australia.
The SheBelieves cup is a US Soccer tournament designed to encourage girls to follow whatever dream they have. Comedy or not, to say that the dream “better be men” at the very least works against this, but also that any other dream is not valued. It’s really no better when construed as a joke.
Marty is a precessions broadcaster. He knows the responsibility he has talking to a wide audience and comedy or not, should have known how many people would interpret his comments even if he truly did mean it as a joke. It was a lazy piece of broadcasting and someone being paid as much as he is should be expected to perform better.
I find that generalisation offensive. If you believe a vast mainstream of the Australian public holds outdated views, that’s your right, but I disagree.
I get that out of context it sounds offensive, which is why I added it. Two things can be correct at once, the lazy reporting and outrage culture we live in is so tiresome, and this thread reflects that.
On its own, and isolated from any reference to him, the comedian, or his show in general, you would be mistaken for thinking he was being sincere or serious in his remarks when he was not. As he usually isn’t.
His comments in general, I don’t really care about, if I heard them and didn’t know his material, I would get irked by them as well. But what bothers me is a clear demonstration of the outrage machine that the media feeds on now, and we all get drawn into. It’s exhausting.
I think what’s actually exhausting is the people like Marty aren’t learning anything, and continue to sprout this same crap again and again. It’s not funny.
I genuinely have listened for years, so this is less “anger bait” and more an observation.
I feel like the tone change of that show has been noticable, with Marty pushing it over the line more and more, but not in a more funny way? Just saying more and more controversial things, with the controversy being the punchline. Losing Loren Barry has contributed to the shows changing too.
It’s one thing to joke about “no foreigners” ironically or as a way of poking fun at Sonia Kruger. But looking at his alleged comment at the AFL Grand Final that caused his extended-break last year.
There’s a point where you stop playing into the “old man” irony trope and actually just say something homophobic, or in this case sexist, that’s not that funny, and not at all different to genuine homophobia and sexism that impacts people.
At that point how is it actually different or more comedic than Kyle Sandilands using similar sexist or homophobic language? It does normalise it.
100%. some of my favorite comedians (Frankie Boyle, Jim Jeffries and Jimmy Carr come to mind) can be offensive to some people. but the majority of the jokes that people find offensive from those listed are punching up.
Marty’s remarks are punching down and thats a big difference.
Exactly. It’s like he’s still in high school in 1984.
Agree. There are people in that demographic who still have those views from a different era and Marty and Triple M just continue to validate those oudated notions.
