Triple M Network

The only problem is at the moment, the AFL’s radio agreements with the ABC, MRN & SCA are ‘national’ ones. For example, MRN’s rights are primarily for 3AW & 6PR but they’re contractually required to air all Sydney/GWS finals games on 2UE and likewise all Brisbane/Gold Coast finals games on 4BC. It’s doubtful that’s going to change in the next rights cycle.

Like I said earlier, Triple M will likely ensure in the next agreement that their NSW & QLD obligations are less strict by only having to broadcast finals (like 2UE & 4BC) or being able to have leeway by only broadcasting games on FM when it doesn’t clash with their NRL commitments and airing other games on their Classic Rock digital station (like they currently do in Perth). The only reason why the conflict happened in the first place was the AFL agreement began a year earlier than the NRL one and when the AFL rights were signed, it wasn’t foreseen that Triple M could secure broader NRL rights and not just Monday Night Football.

Thanks for that!

So with that in mind here are the potential clashes for the remainder of the seasons up to Round 20 in the NRL. These are to the best of my knowledge so it may not be 100% accurate.

ROUND 2 AFL: Swans play the 4:40 Sunday game, clashes with Parramatta vs Penrith. Lions game at 3:30 (daylight savings still in effect for Saturday) may clash with Storm vs Knights should they go into Golden Point

R3: Swans play 4:40 Saturday game, potential clash with Parramatta vs Canberra if it goes GPET. Lions play 4:40 Sunday clashing with Newcastle vs Tigers

R4: No clash for Swans who play Saturday Night, Lions play 4:40 Saturday , potential clash with Titans vs St.George/Illawarra

R5: Swans play 1:10 Saturday, should get 2nd half of Canterbury vs Gold Coast. No clash for Lions who play Saturday Night. No Thursday Night game so MMM will probably cover the Roosters vs Dragons ANZAC Day game (Brisbane will get their team on FNF). MMM Melbourne will also get MNF this week after Collingwood vs Essendon (Storm vs Warriors)

R6: Lions host the Swans in the 1:10 game on Sunday. Won’t clash with the normal Sunday MOTD (which involves the Broncos) but with no MNF prior to the rep weekend it may mean that there’s only 3 NRL games covered that weekend

R7: No clash for Sydney as they play Saturday Night, Lions play against Port in the 4:40 game so they’ll probably not get City vs Country (like they care anyway)

R8: No clash as both the Swans and Lions play on Saturday Night

R9: No clash for Swans who play Friday Night, probably no clash for Lions who play 1:10 Sunday

R10: Not sure which NRL games MMM will call in a shortened round leading into Origin 1. Swans play FNF (Brisbane will get that game as Broncos play Tigers), Lions play early Saturday but no clash as there’s no Saturday fixtures scheduled before 7:30.

R11: Lions play 1:40 Saturday which clashes with their Broncos trip across the tasman (the 3PM Saturday game which is 5PM over there). Swans play Saturday night on the Gold Coast so no clash. 2 Sunday games with no TNF after origin (probably cover Souths vs Gold Coast).

R12: Lions play 4:40 Saturday, may clash with Newcastle vs Warriors. Swans play 4:40 Sunday in a Bridge Battle (GWS), clashing with St.George vs Canterbury which is being played literally down the road.

R13: Lions play 1:10 Saturday with no clash given this round leads into Origin 2, Swans play 1:10 Sunday but game should be finished in time for Warriors vs Roosters.

R14: Swans have a Bye, Lions are at 1:10 Saturday with the first half of Newcastle vs St.George/Illawarra clashing, but they’ll get Canterbury vs Broncos that night. Again no TNF NRL following Origin 2

R15: Lions have a Bye, Swans play 4:10 Saturday clashing with Warriors vs Gold Coast

R16: Swans play Friday Night in Geelong so no clash, Lions play 1:40 in the Q Clash on the Gold Coast, but no clash given it’s the lead in round to Origin 3 (no Sat Afternoon game)

R17: Swans play Thursday Night but no clash as no TNF NRL game scheduled the night after Origin 3. Lions play 4:40 Sunday clashing with Penrith vs Parramatta. No Saturday Afternoon game with the last NRL byes scheduled, but Brisbane’s trip to play Souths will be on for Brisbane

R18: Swans play 1:10 Saturday clashing with first half of Canberra vs Warriors. Lions 1:10 Sunday meaning there shouldn’t be a clash with St.George/Illawarra vs Wests Tigers.

R19: NRL Draw TBD, No clash for Lions who play Saturday Night, Swans play the 3:20 game in Perth (1:20 local start) so that will clash with whatever the 4PM NRL game is.

R20: Swans play 1:10 Saturday clashing with 1st half of Sat Afternoon game (Saturday Afternoon game certain as Warriors play away), No clash for Lions who play Saturday Night in Adelaide

R21: No clash for Swans who play Saturday Night, Lions play 1:10 Saturday at home, clashing with potential Saturday Afternoon game

R22: Swans play 1:10 game in Hobart against North, Lions play 3:20 Sunday game at home to Geelong

R23: TBD in both codes, but suspect the Lions who play St.Kilda may get a Sunday afternoon game if both aren’t in contention as expected. Swans may also get a FNF or SNF game given they host Richmond.

Apologies if I’ve asked this before, but does Triple M still have songs on the servers that were converted from 45’s? One Perfect Day by The Little Heros was just on the Cold 30 complete with low frequency rumble and clicks/pops.

Play By Numbers (the 1996 CD release which contained the song) was mastered from vinyl (according to this very detailed discussion) since EMI ‘lost the master tapes’. However, One Perfect Day does appear on numerous CD compilations since then, including:

Essential Eighties 2 (I have this set - highly recommended) - 3-discs (EMI 1999)
Counting The Beat: Australian Pop Of The 80s (also looks excellent) - 2-discs (Sony BMG 2007)

My guess is that 4MMM are still playing the Play By Numbers CD version of One Perfect Day which will contain vinyl artifacts (pops & clicks).

You’d think that EMI or MMM would clean up the vinyl artefacts as part of the re-mastering proces (or want of a better term).
It would sound a bit weird hearing artefacts like that on CD or radio these days.

And for the record (or CD collection in this case ), I have all 5 of those Aussie Pop of the 80s CD sets that were released.
They are BRILLIANT! Wish there were more of them.

Looked at those compilations (still being sold at JB Hi-fi) impressive!

Out of curiosity, I pulled out my CD (Essential Eighties 2, disc 1) and listened with headphones to the first 15 seconds & closing 15 seconds of One Perfect Day (track 13). There are definitely pops audible on the (brilliant) One Perfect Day. It seems we can’t blame 4MMM for playing vinyl in this case.

Nonetheless, I would probably welcome more vinyl albums being played on commercial radio. Actually not fussy on the source - quite simply hearing full albums are always welcome in the age of the digital download. Hey, now there is an idea for a possible new digital only station - full vintage albums overnight 7pm - 7am. :joy:

The Sound in NZ play an album side straight off vinyl complete with rumbles and clicks every night at 9pm AEST. I listen all the time online. The presenter is Mike Currie and is easy to listen to!

I have those Australian pop hits CDs of the 80s too, great songs on there

Brig Duclos returned to Triple M this week as she presented the news on The Hot Breakfast while Seb Costello has been over in Europe for Nine News.

104.5 Triple M Brisbane are airing promos for a Classic Rock May. This suggests a return to the popular Classic Rock Summer format for the duration of May.

Leading the way, from August 6 - August 22, the Triple M Network will capture the excitement, emotion and energy from Rio with a broadcast of selected events from Seven’s multiple broadcast and streaming channel coverage across the Games period.

Roy & HG will be heard on Triple M for the first time since 2011, where they’ll do a show each weekday from 12pm across the Triple M & LocalWorks network for the duration of the Rio Olympics, starting from Monday 8th August.

Does Adrian Barich, Andrew Embley, Lachy Reid & Tania Armstrong. cover all home game at Patterson? if so, do they cover those games for Triple M Melbourne?

Yes, they’re now the main Perth team. In regards to Triple M Melbourne, the Mix 94.5 broadcast is aired whenever they pick a West Coast or Fremantle home game to broadcast

As mentioned in another thread, Triple M Sydney has changed it’s positioner…

“Playing Whatever, Whenever” - with a tag line of “You Never Know What Song We’ll Play Next”…

The positioner does sound very Jack FM format ish, and the tag line is similar to it’s 2005 format, but the music I’ve heard so far doesn’t seem to be much different to what I’ve heard in the past… still sounds very “Rock Variety” ish to me (their previous positioner).

Will keep listening.
