Triple M Network

i stumbled across some youtube videos of todd from barwon heads calling up rush hour and having a go at billy brownless. the more i see of them, the more im convinced its a set up

I have wondered how much of a setup it is - either Bins is a good actor or there are times he genuinely doesn’t know its coming

It’s clearly set up - but that doesn’t mean Brownless is in on the set up.

Yeah I’d say its a set up - they wouldn’t be letting him through if it wasn’t (they’d have realised his number or voice by now). Billy is obviously not in on it though, and whether it’s a case of them asking him to call up or if he just calls up and they just put him though I’m not sure.

I’ve long suspected its someone within Triple M - the whole thing feels so tightly scripted and stage-managed

I suspect the same.

I reckon I heard the same voice as Todd from Barwon Heads using a different name call up 3MMM during the work day doing one of those fake sounding phone calls of “how do I win tickets to Foo Fighters” or “can you play this song…”.

So could be a random staff member in sales or something.

In respect to MMM Tradie Radio, I posted a few weeks ago how bad the idea was, but having given it a decent listen during the school holidays can say it’s grown on me. It’s a much broader playlist and bounces between rock, hip hop and dance, which is fine with me because it’s what I was listening to back in the day anyway. On Saturday they played Faithless which always sounds good. They’re also not fixed on one decade, with the odd 80’s track thrown in. It’s a much better listening experience for longer periods of time with less repetition. Overall a step in the right direction I would say.

only if you like hip hop and dance its ok its cringe to move away from rock

Been enjoying listening to “Nights with Dave Gleeson” in recent weeks.

Tonight at 9:20pm they’re playing “Sunday Bloody Sunday” by U2 and in recent nights have been playing classics by Nickelback, Evanescence, Garbage and Finger Eleven among others.

They could do with playing more recent throwbacks such as Imagine Dragons, though.

It’s somewhat better than the same overplayed ACDC/Queen song over and over.

Still think it’s a interesting choice for them to put different tracks other than rock on Tradie Radio. You would think that’s what the tradie audience wants, they would want rock similar to the main station. Personally it isn’t my cup of tea, but good that they are experimenting something new.

The playlist sounds similar to Triple M Perth.

Is anyone able to do a comparison of the two stations’ logs?

I heard a sweep on Triple M Perth as they were about to play The Kid Laroi saying how Triple M Perth now plays The Kid Laroi, but not like the other stations that play him every 45 minutes, “Over and Nova and Nova”.

A clever (but obvious) dig at Perth’s number one station.

I remember in 2008 they played two of Katy Perry’s first hits - I Kissed a Girl and Hot n Cold.

I’ve listened to bits of Triple M Perth whilst over here, and I can see why it’s not working. Or why I think anyway……

It’s not necessarily the “real alternative” music itself - I think the issue is a similar one that Syd/Melbourne/Bris stations faces - one of inconsistencies but even more magnified as even the music programs are not consistent.

For instance, “Homegrown” is on right now and they’re playing Powderfinger, Johnny Diesel and The Injectors and Crowded House, hardly “real alternative” artists. They are as mainstream as any.

And this afternoon, they had their AFL game call of Fremantle v Brisbane. And they take Marty Sheargood, have their own Rush Hour and take Nights with Dave Gleeson…. programs that don’t really align with a “real alternative” ethos.

It’s just a giant mess.

I think it’s also because when they launched, the format of Triple M Perth was different and more like the east coast stations.

Had they launched with this younger format, they might’ve hung onto some of the ex-hit92.9 listeners.

I really hate hearing Ed Sheeran on Triple M!
His music doesn’t belong on the station.

One song does…

“Blow” his 2019 collaboration with Bruno Mars and Chris Stapleton… very rock sounding.
