Tokyo Olympics Coverage

Shame all the people covering the games aren’t really there. Covering the games but not really covering the games. It’s such a dire situation.

The Winner Is Brisbane?

8:00PM - 8:45PM

CC

The International Olympic Committee is set to announce the host city of the 2032 Olympic Games, with Brisbane a frontrunner. ABC News Queensland’s Matt Wordsworth is joined by special guests to look ahead to what’s next.

I’m assuming there will be a frenzy for the right from 2024 onwards to try and lock in 2032.

Nine and ViacomCBS would probably bid given their ability to monetize the rights beyond advertising. Hopefully seven are outbid. Sick of their pathetic coverage over the years.

Sunrise welcomes Aussie legends to its Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 coverage

Sunrise has bolstered breakfast television’s #1 team with a cavalcade of Aussie sporting greats as part of its special coverage of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

With the most anticipated Olympic Games ever now just three days away, the Seven Network today announced Natalie Barr, David Koch and the Sunrise team will be joined by a panel of Australian Olympic icons led by Grant Hackett, Stephanie Rice, Sally Pearson, Giaan Rooney, Jana Pittman, John Steffensen, Shane Heal and Stuart O’Grady.

Fellow Olympic greats James Tomkins, Matthew Mitcham and Tom Burton will also be part of Sunrise’s coverage throughout the Games, along with 2012 ASP World Tour Champion Joel Parkinson as surfing makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo.

Australia’s greatest Olympian, five-time Gold medallist Ian Thorpe, will also join Nat and Kochie for several live crosses throughout the Games, while Sunrise ’s own Mark Beretta will be live on the ground in Tokyo to bring viewers all the latest news, colour and atmosphere from the host city. Plus, Edwina Bartholomew will co-host Seven’s afternoon coverage of Tokyo 2020 alongside Olympian and 7NEWS presenter Matt Shirvington.

The families of our Olympians obviously cannot be in Tokyo for the Games, but a host of them will join Sunrise to lead Australia’s cheer squad back home.

Sunrise Executive Producer, Michael Pell, said: “ Sunrise is the only place to wake up across the entire 17 days of Tokyo 2020. With an unrivalled panel of Aussie Olympic legends, Beretts at the centre of all the action in Tokyo and live competition as it gets underway each day, Nat, Kochie and the team will have all your Olympic action, news and drama covered.”

Sunrise is the only Aussie brekky show where viewers will be able to see live competition from Tokyo and all the latest Olympic highlights, news and exclusive athlete interviews from 5.30am AEST on weekdays and 6.00am AEST on weekends.

I think this will be the case. Since Ch10 have been owned by ViacomCBS, 2024 are the first Olympics to be on the market. The US know how big the Olympics broadcasting is so should be willing to invest to secure the games on 10 and Paramount+!

If the IOC is clever, they should sell the 2032 rights on their own to really create one heck of a bidding war. However, they might package it with other Olympics if they’re looking for a long-term rights partner.

Nine News promo

Not sure if Nine or ViacomCBS would be interested until 2032 since they’ve said before that it’s hard to profit off these short-term events.

Nine News also has a countdown.

This is a lie though seeing it is also on Seven!

As much as I’d personally prefer a different broadcaster, I reckon there’s a reasonably high chance of “Australia’s Olympic Network” (Seven) getting the rights to the 2032 Olympics if held in South East Queensland.

Only on 9 news?
How can they write such a lie?

IIRC Nine made a significant $ loss on London 2012 and one of the factors for not bidding / enough and ultimately Seven returning as broadcaster for Rio 2016.

This is even though Nine dominated ratings during that fortnight in 2012, including a 50%+ share and 2m+ metro for the Opening Ceremony. Most prime time sessions were very high 1m metro (on par with Seven’s Beijing 2008).

@Sully …thankyou.

But an event almost held 10 years ago now, it’s a very different situation I think all networks will be interested. Just how Nine had 2006 Commonwealth Games

Also, Nine shared the rights with Foxtel for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics so that played a factor too

Yes it was a terrible simulcast deal.

It’s amazing that NBC have such a large team there for the coverage with sets and studios on the ground. Sevens will look terrible in comparison.
