Because no one cares about an Olympic Games held during a pandemic without a crowd, all while interest in the Games themselves has been dwindling for many years.
Is that last statement accurate. I know many people interested in the Games whi will just watch when they’re on, but not have the hype. While tv ratings may be down, they are still a major draw card and I think the way it is consumed (online) will be HUGE this year.
Australians’ interest in the games clearly peaked in 2000, and to some extent was always going to. Beijing 2008 was a true spectacle and in a great timezone for Australian TV audiences, but it’s been clearly downhill from London 2012 onwards. Didn’t hear a peep about Rio 2016 from most people.
Now, anecdotes are just that; don’t get me wrong. But when most of the conversation around Tokyo is centred around COVID-19 and whether the event should be going ahead, it takes any remaining shine and allure away.
Not as though we’re starved for domestic sports alternatives, either.
Then there’s also the consideration that Seven are bleeding money and no doubt overbid for yet another over-inflated sports rights package. From their point of view, the less they can pay talent, the more they can produce out of Melbourne (or Sydney) the better. But by being remote you lose any on-the-ground atmosphere: the energy, the excitement, the glamour of the world’s best athletes congregating in the one place.
Except, of course, that there isn’t any. Because we’re in a pandemic.
If they can’t travel to Melbourne, I reckon they might have them host out of the Martin Place Studios in Sydney, or alternatively replace them with Melbourne based presenters.
As for the interest point/argument, I feel like Tokyo is similar to Rio 2016 in that the games generally don’t have the hype surrounding them in the lead-up (even more so this time for obvious reasons). However, think people will start to be interested/engaged once the Olympics actually begin and Australians are winning medals.
The games will lack the hype but they’re in our prime time so they’ll rate. If Australia win a couple of early medals then it will rate. And if NSW is still in lockdown it will also rate. I reckon 7 are budgeting on 40% shares every night

i get that - i just thought a show on a secondary digital channel with the announcement and packages around it filmed at the potential Olympic venues, perhaps with talking heads talking about the games, perhaps the failed 92 Brisbane bid and even atheletes talking about how the games in brisbane will help win medals, with a cross to the IOC for the live vote might happen - if only in brisbane
