Today (2020-Feb 2025)

Tbh they should’ve keep the brand ‘TODAY’. Plus they wasted their time there not showing off Paris last week. But focusing on Biden leaving the presidential campaign.

Well they showed good judgment there.

On one hand, there is too much Olympics, not enough news. On the other, should have shown more of Paris and less news.

Can’t please everyone.

General breakfast TV question, especially for ratings nerds – I presume the 7am hour is the most watched period of breakfast TV? Does anyone know the specifics? When do more people tune in at a time? Does 6am hour do better or worse than 8am?

The ratings that are posted for both Today and Sunrise only cover 7am-9am only. There is a separate rating for both the 5:30 am half hour and 6:00 am hour - both are lower though sometimes show up in the top 30 rankings because of reach.

So the 7-9 is def the most watched portion of the program then?

Yes.

Tbh… I’ve had to turn to Sunrise to get news this morning.

Yeah, not good. I don’t think they’ve realised they are actually alienating a lot of viewers.

No opening to the show this morning. Small caption to say Next-Today in Paris. Early coverage was of Jess Fox including a rare look at the commentators at the venue. The show has included in studio experts today.

Ol uncle Karlos dozing off during the replays. Must be hard working these late hours! Gold

The show is the only place to go to get the full Olympic experience but this morning felt a bit flat and drawn out.

They needed more variety in coverage with some live crosses instead of basing everything in the dark studio. Fortunately so far there have been some big Australian highlights to share that viewers are going to tune in for, but further into the games that may not be case.

This “Live Cross” shown at 9:40am yet it is dark in Longreach is deceptive - it is actually to a “live site” where the Matildas game was show around 3am.

Viewers seemed to enjoy Sunday’s Today in Paris with a national audience over 800,0000 and an Early session with almost 700k.

The ratings show they are killing it. Nine spent a fortune on the Olympics and are making the most of it.

Sure there are plenty who don’t care about the Olympics (myself included) and there are also people who do want regular news but the majority of viewers want all Olympics all the time and they are getting that.

Regular Today will be back in a couple of weeks. They may very well lose some to Sunrise or News Breakfast who won’t come back but I think they will be fine. They are likely to pick up many more who will take their place.

In the minority? :man_shrugging:

It’s a big hit so far, fat chance of any changes now

Exactly

Yeah, I don’t think they will be able to include these two weeks in their yearly averages. It’s a completely separate show. Sunrise kept its branding, had openers and did Sunrise news updates. Today is effectively on hiatus as of yesterday.

Confirmed that Today won last week in the 5-city market.
