I actually quite enjoy watching this show when I can, but the content past 7:20am can be questionable.
Yesterday they were low key promoting Dyson vacuums and products as segments. They should allocate this time to do in-depth news reporting and analysis since viewership is at it’s highest from 7:00am onwards.
Today still feels like such a low budget affair when compared with Sunrise. The dark studio, little change in content. The ratings weren’t going to change with just a talent swap.
The hosts aren’t whats wrong with TODAY now, its the content. The segment at 6:40 often with politicians and radio people is so boring, often Pauline Hansen is on it. The news at 7am today had a part with Richard Quest from CNN which was really good. Much of the content needs an overhaul.
This may sound bad, but I think they should just ignore WA (yes, basically contradicts everything I always say) but no matter how hard they try it never works in WA.
There focus should be looking at NSW, QLD and VIC and working out why people are changing from 9 at 6AM and part of that problem is content.
They changed the EP and everything else stayed the same, except the presenters, so that won’t do much. Actually, I think they would struggle to find anyone who would want to EP the show.
Very concerning, particularly given it is only Q1.
I agree, the hosts are fine. Quite likable and watchable. But the show feels and looks dated. It does not feel fresh or innovative. It feels like a cheap version of Sunrise. Rather than something better, or something different. In this case, Sunrise is clearly the better show.
They need an EP that will take some risks with format and content and tone.
They need news lead ins in each market 530-7am (“Today in Sydney”)
They need local news inserts every 30 minutes heavy on weather and traffic and commuter info
They need it to feel newsier. Look at GMA in the US. It’s got a very fast paced consumer friendly news feel about it. Today feels saggy and blokey to me. It doesn’t feel fresh.
They certainly need a new EP.
That need someone to task risks and introduce new concepts to breakfast TV - like Boland and McKnight did.
I don’t know why you would choose Today over sunrise. I get why people choose New Breakfast - it’s a whole different show. But Today is just a weaker version of Sunrise.
If you ever flick between Sunrise and Today, you find they are often doing the same thing at the same time, which obviously is coincidence but its clearly a formula.
It seems Today are trying to keep up with the Jonses (Sunrise) instead of break away and innovate.
