Surely we should be expecting a set change next week? It’s so random that they’re broadcasting from the news studio as opposed to doing shows from locations across Melbourne/Victoria let alone ‘We Love Australia’ trip…?

@TVHead I stand corrected. It seems that each day they are replacing one of their team members with a Melbourne identity:

I doubt there will be a set change.

OBs are harder to arrange and can be more expensive than relocating studios.

I don’t think it’s random at all, I see this week as a trial for more regular shows from Melbourne similar to what Sunrise used to do on Fridays back in the day. It would be great if they could just jump on a plane and do one-off shows from Melbourne or Brisbane (or Adelaide/Perth for that matter) without the rigmarole of coordinating a big OB.

I have to say in Perth where they do local news every half hour inserted into the Today show it does look funny going from the Today show to Perth set which looks exactly the same.

Tuesday (26.06.2018): Sylvia Jeffreys is co-hosting with Georgie this morning live in Melbourne. Peter Hitchener is reading the news.

They have also updated the backdrop so it looks like Today Perth News, with a loop of the Melbourne skyline faded behind their usual sunrise backdrop. Looks better already.

This week the show is being hosted from Melbourne for a full week for the first time in 12 years. Stefanovic says it is long overdue.

“I think it’s the home of television. I’ve always pressured for us to do more down here,” he continues.

“I’ve always said I would love to do the show permanently out of Melbourne -but that would probably be dramas for everyone else in the show! But I would do it here in a heartbeat.”

But Today is also hoping to show the Melbourne-love because is it trailing Sunrise. While Nine has won 6 weeks in Melbourne this year, Sunrise has 11 under its belt. The audience average is much tighter with Today‘s 59,000 to Sunrise‘s 61,000.

“It’s a problem for us,” Stefanovic acknowledges.

“You have to give back to a city. It’s our fault for letting them go. Of course we are here because our numbers are not good. But they aren’t good because we haven’t connected with this city for a long time.”

Based at GTV9 studios this week, the Today set isn’t discernible to the average viewer to one in Sydney. Shouldn’t the show capitalise on its location with an outdoor broadcast?

“I pushed back on that. I think outdoor broadcasts can be distracting for a viewer. We will get out and do stories here. But an outside broadcast needs to be for a reason, or based around an event,” he continues.

“I love being here with Melbourne content and no distractions. But for everyone else around Australia, it doesn’t look any different. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Some great ideas and points here. But maybe they need a Melbourne presenter a part of the team. Bec Maddern is on today… surely I’m not the only one to connnect the dots.

I’m aware that GTV9 has just completed a refurbishment of its studios and dressing rooms. This could be to cater for more national productions during the year.
