The Traitors

I’m surprised that the Dutch version has got a second series as it was one of the biggest flops in the channels history.

Perhaps The Traitors was just too real (minus the murdering bit) and Aussies prefer the manufactured drama of MAFS and The Block. This is a show where things are largely (but not completely) left in the hands of the contestants and the format of the game.

I’m actually a big fan of the Aussie version but the one thing that did grate on me was the smugness or character played by the host. I know he would have been briefed to play it that way (and I’m sure the other countries versions are similar) but perhaps that is what Australians disliked about the series.

That and the fact that ten has never really gotten anything to work in the tail end of the year……

I know a lot would remember my critique at ten and their play it safe host selection. Although I don’t think Roger was the right choice I don’t think that is solely the reason it failed.

Why 10 decided to show this against the block is beyond comprehension for me. I don’t understand why 10 is so stuck in its ways to air MasterChef at the time of the year it does. They have always successfully launched shows at that time of the year. The traitors is perfect winter viewing (evident by the Uk and US versions). Air it straight after I’m a celebrity in May.

I also think it should have been aired in Scotland it’s the big appeal of the other English versions.

If I was to choose a host I would have chosen Noni Hazlehurst. She has had experience in period dramas, the demographic 10 are targeting are very familiar with her, she is an icon and she sells shows well in interviews.

I really think 10 should give this a third go for next year.

The show was a ratings hit in Canada and NZ too - both filmed locally, with Canada filming in a Old Manor (which is similar to the vibe of the Castle in UK & US), while NZ filmed in a modern looking house in the NZ countryside.

I haven’t watched either of those versions. So I can’t really comment or compare. Just having watched the US, UK and Australia version I felt the Scottish mansion was part of the charm. It’s not to say I disliked the Australian version either. As I said above this was only 1 of many things 10 and production could have done better.

I don’t think Rodger was the problem at all - he was very good in the role, and the format is designed for the host to play more of a character than host it straight.

The hotel was certainly underwhelming compared to the castle, but had great grounds for the missions - interior wise it could all be improved but the biggest problem was the breakfast room which was just a large white room with no character. Even just changing that and keeping the other areas as they were could make a huge difference to the atmosphere.

I never said he was. I just think it is was the safe choice. Which to me is a problem with 10. I like him as a host. I just wouldn’t have chosen to be host.

If 10 were to bring it back they can’t just bring it back with the same host, same location and same time slot. Something or multiple things need to change so they can promote it. Just changing the breakfast room probably wouldn’t do it either.

Agree a retooling of the show would be needed if they considered to bring it back.

Who would we like to see host this? I almost think it needs to be someone a little dark, with a slightly comedic edge.

I think the trouble with a show in the position of The Traitors is you’ve got to balance appealing to the people who watched the show with appealing to the people who didn’t. Personally I think ditching Rodger would guarantee it would flop again, but doing the same thing that already failed twice wouldn’t work either.

Casting and scheduling are the key things that need nurturing. Must say as much as we all hate the idea of using celebs it might be the point of different that’s needed, even if it’s 20 reality stars. If they can get a slice of the MAFS pie they probably need to grab it.

10 also need to be doing more work whilst it’s off air - they’ve wisely put the foreign versions on 10Play but is it worth giving them a run on one of the digital channels. Add in the NZ and Canada versions and reruns of the Aussie version and you’ve months of content to air it across the week there.

I would pick Noni Hazlehurst - it’s a little left of centre. She interviews so well that it’s a perfect promotional tool in itself.

As I said though I liked Rodger, he was fine host. I just don’t think having the same show, same location, same host and same time slot would see this show improve.

Interesting choice, but I could actually see that. Nice one

They should take the same approach as “The Bridge” - make it exclusive for Paramount+ and then air it on FTA during non-ratings or weekly on Saturdays.

Noni Hazlehurst is a good suggestion. I would never have thought of her but she could play up the role well.

Did the current US and UK seasons follow the exact format? Really enjoyed this season for the first half and some of the twists (like the poisoning) but not liking when they have twists that we don’t see anyone go in an episode or stretch out episodes (like the recent one). I’m guessing the outcome of the season might become predictable after this current vote which might be why. There are 9 left with 2 episodes so the next one must cull pretty fast with the banishment/murder and then another banishment.

But The Bridge clearly didn’t do enough numbers on P+ to warrant another season, and neither did The Traitors over 2 seasons on FTA - despite further interest in the overseas version which saw 10 pick those up for streaming and even little ‘ol NZ acquiring the rights to produce a local season.

I was a massive fan of The Bridge, and would love another season. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like that will happen now.

Audiences should grab some popcorn and pour themselves a chalice of fizzy rosé, because THE most hotly anticipated film of the year is to die for! Expect Jazatha Christie being ignored, Ross’ infamous wink, Diane’s untimely murder and the Traitors turning on each other at the roundtable.

Catherine Tate will also take on the role of Evie. Or is that Charlie? Perhaps they are one and the same person after all…

The all-star cast are true fans of the original show and jumped at the opportunity to take part in The Traitors: The Movie for Comic Relief.

The Traitors: The Movie will air on Comic Relief: Funny for Money on 15 March from 7pm, on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Hearing this show is getting a Season 3, just not with 10.

If it does get a season 3 elsewhere, it will be interesting to see whether the “10 factor” has actually played a part on the low ratings, or whether Australia just didn’t like the format.
