The Real Housewives of Melbourne/Sydney

There is no point bringing it back anymore. It has been way too long. As much as I would love to see it again… the show can’t survive if it’s going to be years between seasons. There’s no continuity. It should have been back by now and it’s not so time to let it rest.

I agree, Foxtel clearly are directing the budget elsewhere, its ridiculous to show 8-10 episodes every 2-3 years, a viewer will not invest in the storylines. It is easier with a longer season as seen in the US as it allows time for the viewers to go on the journey of the cast.

I would not have thought it would have been a huge expense given the majority of the cast are not really in it for the $$$ maybe one of the multi channels can re-launch in a few years (looking at you 9Life).

Foxtel blew it.

IMO proof that they remain incompetent with the production of local reality programming, even compared to Australian FTA standards.

I’m happy that there will be a new season, but they can’t continue having a huge gap between seasons. It feels disconnected

The Real Housewives of Melbourne - Season 5

Pop the champagne! They are coming back!

Foxtel today announced that its most talked about and polarising reality series The Real Housewives of Melbourne has been commissioned for a fifth season.

Produced by Matchbox Pictures, part of NBCUniversal International Studios, in conjunction with Foxtel, casting discussions have commenced for the new season.

The Real Housewives of Melbourne first launched in 2014 on Arena to rave reviews, making it the most watched reality show in Foxtel’s history. The past four seasons have been an outstanding success and Foxtel is delighted to be bringing Melbourne’s most infamous Housewives to audiences once again.

Foxtel Executive Director of Television Brian Walsh said: ‘ The Real Housewives of Melbourne took Australia by storm, changing our television landscape like never before and we are delighted to bring it back for Foxtel viewers. We are continually blown away with the passionate way audiences consume this captivating series that has made household names out of Melbourne’s now infamous Housewives.

‘This series has a huge following of loyal and adoring fans and it was paramount we picked the perfect time to commission a fifth season. We are proud to partner once again with Matchbox Pictures with a big cast shake up set for the new season which will see fresh faces join some of our most loved Melbourne Housewives.’

The Real Housewives of Orange County is the series that started the Real Housewives franchise which has now spawned series across the US in Miami, New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Washington DC, Dallas and Potomac which screen on Arena the home of Housewives. Other international Housewives series include Auckland, Israel, Athens, Cheshire, Vancouver, Toronto, Johannesburg, Hungary and France.

The Real Housewives of Melbourne is the first Australian instalment of the world’s number one lifestyle reality franchise, which led the way for The Real Housewives of Sydney and provides an insider view of the lifestyles of the wealthy and extravagant women with a revealing insight into their world.

Matchbox Pictures Managing Director, Alastair McKinnon said: ‘ The Real Housewives of Melbourne are returning to bring all the glitz, glamour and outrageous drama that has made this one of the most beloved versions of the franchise worldwide. Together with Foxtel we cannot wait to share with audiences all the surprises we have in store when the series returns in 2020.’

The Real Housewives of Melbourne Season 5 will stream on Foxtel and screen on Arena in 2020.

Ten should try and get a deal on this to run theses episodes (and earlier seasons) a night or two after they air on Foxtel, would help to meet the production costs (which could mean more episodes).

The commercial networks would have already done this by now if they saw any $$$ in it. It’s too niche.

Not really. Foxtel has rights to the format which is why the commercials haven’t. (As well as all international seasons)
The Roxy show on 10 is the closest to it… despite being crap. I feel they would jump at at if they could have.

Knowing that the Beverly Hills version airs (or has aired in the past) on 9Life, you’d think Nine also wouldn’t have minded picking up an Australian version of The Real Housewives if they could’ve?

The Beverly Hills seasons airing on 9life are a few years behind… but in saying that Hay-U have the rights to hold past seasons for streaming as well as the latest episodes. Interestingly enough it appears for the last couple of years, Foxtel only hold the rights to have the latest episode available for catchup and not any past episodes, the usually overwrite the last one with the latest each week.

I don’t think any commercial network would be able to run the old Melbourne seasons as they are foxtel originals.
The only exception of this is when ABC was running Wentworth, but I imagine that only happened because of the ABC being a public broadcaster and not commercial. Fox wouldn’t want any commercial networks making any money out of their original content I would imagine.

Have they started filming this yet?

Feb start date at current, filming for 10 weeks

Damn I was hoping the announcement would mean that they would get straight into it and it would maybe start early 2020. Looks like it will be mid year then and maybe they haven’t even locked in who is and isn’t coming back yet.

I believe that is contingent on casting and not defininte. My understanding is Foxtel are pushing for Matchbox to integrate Krissy Marsh & Nicole O’Neil into the cast some how, I am not sure if it is a full time housewives or “friends of” if so it could be intersting.

Of the current (or dare I say previous) cast Jackie, Janet & Gamble were only based in Melbourne during filming.

Expect a new cast member or two to be a known name to generate press when casting is annoucned. Historically they announce the cast prior to filming commencing, which is the opposite of the US versions.

Janet lives in Melbourne, she does a lot of stuff around the Prahran area for her Tea and I believe her partner Sam is also based in Melbourne. You see it all over social media all the time.
Gamble lives down the Peninsula.
