10 should arguably just exist as an OTT or on-demand service if its audience is like how it’s talked about.
Well its probably the way of the future and a big reason why 10 wouldn’t get rid of the project. The audience will follow on the platform or direction tv goes in.
The thing everyone needs to remember about the project is that the majority of its audience isn’t watching tv at that time. They are not getting home every night at 6:30 to watch the project. They are the audience to watch the clips on facebook and catch up the news. But the audience is likely out most nights around that time, finishing work etc. I do agree 10 could probably make a better profit from the Project but they claim that it is very profitable.
The audience vs social media views don’t add up, and as with lots of social media, views/followers/popularity can be bought or corrupted. I would question if the viral clips are legitimate.
Like Sunrise and Today, The Project gets a lot of casual viewers dropping in and out too.
You just don’t like The Project don’t you?
It’s not on fire but it’s attracting a lot of buzz with its content and is apparently very profitable. So I don’t think they’ll get rid of it anytime soon.
All seems pretty legit to me. I have friends from the UK that share posts from Waleed and Lisa.
Lol I don’t not like it - I do watch it occasionally but I just think it (and that time slot generally) have a lot more potential for 10.
Such as?
It’s all about who’s hosting for me. If Wilkinson or MacDonald are on, I’m out.
I think a one hour game show from 6pm to 7pm would potentially work better - something event like/family focused, Sale of the Century/Deal or No Deal etc
The problem is we have way too much news from 4pm until 7.30pm, it’s crowded, and I think people are craving light entertainment and a point of difference. At 6.30pm, there are news oriented shows on ABC, 7,9 and 10 all going for a similar audience.
I’d start their normal programming from 7pm (Masterchef/Bachelor/DWTS etc) and potentially move The Project to an alternative late night news or afternoon.
I doubt anything would ‘work’ at 6pm for 10 but to put it in perspective The Project is the best they could do. Sales of the Century/Deal or No Deal reboots would do worse and would only deepen 10’s 6pm hole.
I don’t see how a one hour game show will work when a couple of half hour game shows have not.
I agree. Seven & Nine News will never be beaten in the ratings for as long as these two networks have the most popular and influential newsreaders in the country, but surely it’d be cheaper to produce another 30 minutes of The Project than a gameshow?
If they haven’t already.
THIS: “Some also criticise The Project for leaning to the left and lecturing viewers”. The number one reason I seldom go near the show. I always switch off feeling patronised and slightly irritated by having certain opinions rammed down my throat. The show’s content doesn’t resonate with this middle aged white male. I’d suggest it would attract a much wider audience if there was more balance.
I’ve always enjoyed Australian comedy and particularly enjoyed the way in which Working Dog’s The Panel would cover news and issues in a light hearted manner. When The Project was first conceived I thought it would follow a similar format but it has turned out to be just too shrill, didactic and earnest. I don’t want a bunch of inner city hipsters force feeding their view of the world to me as they look down their noses at people who have a differing opinion. I’m not a fan of Steve Price and I’m not quite as old as he is but the way they dismiss his views, disrespect him and disparage him is quite abhorrent. I suspect the show doesn’t attract viewers because a big chunk of the audience feels disregarded and excluded from the conversation.
From this new 10 sales reel that was posted online yesterday, it alludes to the shareable content that The Project generates online and you would assume how they could monetise this further for advertisers.
You’ve summed up what I don’t like about The Project NZ pretty well. And the Steve Price of our Project is obviously Mark Richardson… the “look down their noses at people who have a differing opinion” -spot on
That said it has its good points. compared with the other 7pm show Seven Sharp it’s pretty well executed.
Seeing as how far to the right a lot of news media lurches in this country, having a progressive viewpoint isn’t a bad thing IMO
