This would have to be the most popular show on the boards this year. 66 posts since I looked before lunch today!
âNat Nails Everything!â
Love her work
Anywhere we can watch this show in NZ? Iâm a fan of Mel Bracewell, sheâs very funny
Try the podcast @nztv
For those who missed it, it encores tonight on 10Shake.
MotoGP was done from Melbourne in 2019. I think from last year its been in Sydney.
Correct. Only TCS, The Project (when there is one person in Melbourne/one person out of the studio, but still in Melbourne) and Teams on 10 use that studio now normally.
Wednesdays ten should just relaunch rove. Donât care what others say. Australia needs a tonight live style show. Ten is the place for it.
Saturday Night Rove will ensure that never happens.
Yep, the spectacular failure of that show (along with âTonightlyâ on ABC COMEDY in 2017-18, plus other factors like the pandemicâŚ) has all but ensured that Australia TV will never again have a live Tonight-style program.
Donât agree with that. Saturday was always going to be the wrong night and they also stuffed with the formula too much. Bring back old school rove, with sidekick Pete (and carrie?) in a 9pm slot on a weeknight. I reckon it will get them 500k
If they get Rove back they should try some new talents instead of rehashing everything old. Nostalgia will only get them so far.
I think there is still a demand for an Australian talk/variety show if it were to be done right (and not have cheap production values; thatâs the biggest caveat), but you canât keep repeating the same mistakes. There were many reasons as for why âSaturday Night Roveâ didnât work out. It wasnât necessarily due to there being a lack of interest in a variety/talk-show program. For starters, Rove McManus himself isnât as much of a drawcard or a âhigh-profileâ name as he was back in the 2000s. It would be liking asking Ray Martin to come out of retirement to host a revived series of âThis Is Your Lifeâ. It just wouldnât work in 2021.
âThe Cheap Seatsâ has worked out because Mel & Tim have built up a following on HYBPA; theyâre well-known, but fresh faces who also appear on a comedy show that is performing well in the ratings. Itâs the perfect combination. I doubt âThe Cheap Seatsâ would have achieved the ratings that it did, had two unknown personalities (who have no connections with HYBPA) were picked to be the co-hosts.
HYBPA is a gold mine and Ten need to better utilise the other panelists of the show. Someone suggested this earlier (sorry, canât remember who), but an âolderâ panel show with the likes of Marty Sheargold, Kitty Flanagan, Jane Kennedy etc. would be great and could potentially be a big ratings hit. Iâve always wanted to see a return of Sam, Santo & Edâs âTotal Footballâ and I hope it may one day become a reality with Ten having picked up the A-League rights.
Thereâs so many opportunities.
Agree. They need to find new talent, not rehash an old show. Just like Melanie Bracewell and Tim McDonald on The Cheap Seats, they need to use someone new.
There was talk, a couple of years ago, about comedian Simon Taylor fronting a chat show. I canât remember if it was going to be on the ABC or a commercial network. Whatever happened to that idea?
I actually think Marty sheargold would be great on his own show. Or perhaps Sam pang
More old fogies. Think younger.
Yeah thereâs reasons he didnât get bigger. Anyway plenty of good comics around.
Apparently the pilot was filmed for 10, the studio in the video looks to be Pyrmont studios.
So that pilot was late 2019 and they might have had plans for the show in 2020. Did coronavirus wreck their plans?
Quite possibly, itâs the kind of show that really does better with people appearing in studio and needs an audience so they probably hit the pause button on it.
Hope they can look at doing something like that again, theyâve got the studio space at Pyrmont to do it and itâs not being utilized much.
