The Amazing Race Australia

My thoughts too. Has to be an hour, but glad to see the following week it is.

Is it on three nights this week?

Yep, continuing Tuesday and Wednesday. Next week it’s Sunday to Tuesday.

I didn’t find the length too long, especially for an opening episode and thought the editing was pretty tight.

I laughed when I thought one of the twins was about to say “holey moley” but it ended up being “holey mother of …”

I thought the first episode was OK but I had a few issues…

There are way too many teams, 14 teams is way too many to keep track of. Even in a 90 minute episode there were teams that received practically zero airtime (e.g. I noticed an older male / female couple only 3/4 of the way through the episode). It seems like it is going to be a long season if there are 3 or 4 non-elimination legs.

That first task of hanging from rope and throwing the ball just seemed like a pointless Survivor style challenge and was not necessary. The rest of the tasks really showcased the region but that challenge was not good to start the race. Also the penalty for skipping a task on the US version is usually 4 hours. This team only got a 30 minute penalty? It just seemed a bit rigged to give them a chance. The amount of time that most teams waited to do that task and then complete it would have been much longer than 30 minutes. So essentially it could have been better for some just to skip it.

Otherwise I think the casting overall seems good and pretty diverse. I’m just worried this season will drag on a bit with episode length, the number of teams etc.

That father and daughter team was lucky to have only copped a 30 minute penalty for failing to complete a task. Had it been designated a roadblock it would have been a full four hours, and the team would have been eliminated.

The tweezers in sugar cane challenge was a real leveler. Amazing how some teams turned up and found the tweezers within 30 seconds; really changed the finishing order.

Tweet from NITV yesterday :slightly_frowning_face:

For tonight’s episode, teams moved from Mossman to Cairns to start the next leg. Interesting that when they were at the airport, they all wore masks with yellow and black stripes (the show’s colour).

7s version of this was polished and classy geared more towards critical acclaim and hardcore fans. last season it was pretty obvious that ten was going down market with it, they had their fast filming turnaround and a bogan host, and the ratings weren’t great.

I thought this year would be different, the promos were well made and it has been in production for a while. But it’s worse, feels like one of those Sunday afternoon or web-only infomercial shows.

I don’t know what you’re seeing. What exactly are you seeing that is cheap? They’re not travelling to international locations but we knew that from the start. It looks just as polished as the original series on Seven to me.

Me too. The only thing I would change is tighter editing because the two episodes shown so far have been a bit of a drag to watch to the end.

I think leg 2 was way too early to introduce the First Class Pass as well as Salvage and Sabotage. They should be handed halfway through the race when there were 6 or 7 teams left. They could turn the fortunes for one of the leading teams.

Yeah this season is just lacking something.

I don’t find many of the teams that exciting and most of the tasks tonight were pretty boring. Especially the first task where they had to go out in the water on the beach with the flags just dragged on way too long and was so hard to follow. I was glad I was watching a bit delayed because we fast forwarded through a bit of it but it was still going 45 minutes into the episode.

I also find this First Class Pass, Salvage and Sabotage just over complicating things and it was way too early. Although they may have changed this leg to non-elimination after the boys quit.

I can’t quite put my finger on it but there is something just off about TARA. I think it’s likely down to episode length but it just lacks the punch and adrenaline that the US version has.

I agree about the episode lengths. The show would benefit from shorter, tighter episodes.

Agreed

I was always a fan of Grant Bowler, but Beau is a much better host - his larrikin/bogan style suits the format really well.

Champion swimmer Emily Seebohm was at the pitstop at Wet ‘n’ Wild Gold Coast to greet the teams. It will be interesting to see which celebrity would be at the mat in future legs.

Back to last night…

Jobelle posted on her Instagram this morning:

We timed out on bombs away yesterday after exhausting all the attempts, served a penalty for that and we learned lots on our first leg. Always learning!

It looks like the crew had enough, and told Jobelle and Rani to stop and just take the 30 minute penalty.
