Popyrin took it in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 and it ended a 20-year drought for Australian men in Masters 1000 events.

Lleyton Hewitt was the last Australian to win at Indian Wells in 2003.

Saville took to X to give her thoughts on what’s become known as ‘the most controversial match point ever’ as Jack Draper defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Cincinnati Open on Saturday.

Saville posted the following tweet as debate raged in tennis circles: ‘1. It’s not a double bounce (Draper tried to hit a volley but just picked it up on the bounce. 2. He doesn’t hit it into the ground. (cause if he did then the ball would be spinning forwards). 3. Even if it’s a double hit - it’s still one swing so it’s legal.’

Kokkinakis then posted the following message, using Saville’s nickname: ‘Dash pls delete’.

Saville simply replied ‘Ok’ and did so, before posting: ‘I sincerely apologise for my actions. I take full responsibility and am committed to being a better person.’

That saw tennis fans back her take on he controversy and urge her to fight back against being silenced.

They’ll be no wheelchair tennis tournament at Flushing Meadows this year due to the Paralympics taking place at the same time as the US Open

That’s unlike last time when the Tokyo Paralympics concluded during the first weekend of the US Open, which allowed Dylan Alcott to jet from Tokyo to NYC and successfully complete the golden calendar slam.

This time, both the Paris Paralympics and US Open conclude in the same week.

Ridiculous - whether it was accidental or planned. You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance… you should be gone for 2 years. Your performance was enhanced. Massage cream…. Yeah nice 🙄 https://t.co/13qR0F9nH2

(Maya Joint) saw off experienced German Laura Siegemund 6-4 7-5 on the first day of the tournament proper — but she faces forgoing $207,000 in prize money, and more with any further wins, after committing to attend the University of Texas in the coming weeks.

US college rules set by the governing NCAA limit student athletes who compete in professional tournaments to paying off expenses rather than earning prize money.

Joint signed a letter of intent and a scholarship deal with the University of Texas almost a year ago, and if she follows through on enrolling she may not see the full cheque from her US Open exploits.

However, Joint claims it is “different from amateur to college” and she could yet secure all the money — although she admits she would “not really know what to do with” the “crazy” amount.

Well done Popyrin. His first Round of 16 in a Grand Slam, after 15 third round losses (according to his on court victory speech). Very humble, to win against Djokovic.

Nine’s report

Having never progressed to the fourth round at a grand slam, Popyrin was ecstatic.

“It’s unbelievable. I’ve been in the third round like 15 times in my career but I haven’t been able to get past to the fourth round, and to be able to do it against the greatest of all time is unbelievable,” he said.
