Ten News First Presenters and Reporters (2015-Sept 2020)

Wait… so in all of that you still found time to watch the news?

Thought so.

No, but what I’m trying to say is, news is happening locally in all cities on this day, and Ten needs to be there in the future.

Ten is there. There is still a presence in the cities.

My God.

I think you should set your standards lower. They aren’t committed to news- particularly on the television- so no surprise really.

Yeap. Sure.

The Perth version of tonight’s news even had a live cross to the newsroom in Perth.

No there not there.
I think 10 have done a great job rebuilding this year, but a lot more needs to be done. The general public still see Seven and Nine as superior news services.
Today’s product (bulletin) that 10 put to air wouldn’t be taken seriously by the general public. Most watching would know this bulletin is coming out of Sydney. It’s seen to the audience as a cost cutting measure, that doesn’t reflect well on the ten news brand.

Does anyone exclusively turn to 10 for their news fix though (not talking about other mediums) anyway? I know I watch 10 Brisbane because it is a decent and good quality news bulletin compared to the other tabloid trash.

But in Sydney and Melbourne? If 10 do a national bulletin, viewers still get their local news from Nine or Seven. I agree with what you are saying (I think they should do local news on weekends too) but don’t most of 10 News’ viewers still watch the 6pm bulletins on the other networks? You’re not missing out on your local news and 10 will likely get the same number of eyes whether the bulletin is local or national.

The mindless drivel from this forum asserting that the general public care about shit like this is rubbish.

It’s one day for Christ sake. 2 including Christmas

Yeah, that’s my point. But to break that negative general perception, ten needs to be local (always). It shows commitment, trust, loyalty and consistency to the news brand. This should be their primary focus in years to come.

Really? Come on.

They. Don’t. Care.

Sure, the people in the news division care about the quality of the bulletins (that is their jobs). But the executives of the network- they wouldn’t care if 10 only did news updates. A reason that the 5pm news is still there is 1) it is cheaper than recording a gameshow etc 2) it rates better than anything else they could possibly put in that timeslot (look at the woes of 6pm).

A network should play to its strengths… news isn’t for 10.

Exactly. It’s not even just because there aren’t bulletins on Good Friday either. How about the lack of local weekend news, critical state/federal election coverage and bulletins on nights of major sports coverage?

We’ve gone on about it all far too often before (probably because most people on Media Spy would actually really want Ten to be competitive against the big boys in news) but if 10 News First thinks the general public perception that their news service is inferior to those of Seven & Nine is wrong, then more needs to be done to changing those general public perceptions - I really can’t put it any more simpler.

The general public will not judge Ten on their bulletin on a Good Friday, they’ll judge them on their coverage of the Federal Election, of the George Pell case, of the Christchurch terror attacks, of breaking news. The net gain from being local on Good Friday is not worth it compared to other ways you can impact your news coverage.

If 7/9 could get away with national bulletins on Good Friday, they absolutely would. It’s always a dead news day (worse than even the slowest Sunday) because (speaking from experience) no one will front, answer calls, email releases, do interviews.

Ten should leave Good Friday as a national bulletin.

I agree that weekend bulletins back would be the next step forward.

Disagree. If you’re going local on weekends, you need to be local on Xmas and Good Friday.

Exactly - today and Christmas Day are the hardest days to put a bulletin together because you have to rely on a truckload of pre-packaged ‘non-topical’ reports due to how little is happening.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate how 10 still does national bulletins on weekends. However, (unless a significant event happens) I don’t have major issues with 10 and the ABC doing national bulletins on the two ‘slow news’ public holidays each year

No newspapers on Good Friday or Christmas day either. National bulletins are a level of coverage better than nothing.

Very odd reaction from this forum.

Daily Telegraph was published as usual in NSW yesterday. They managed to fill 68 pages, too. Pretty good for a public holiday.

I think they do these days.
