Ten News First Content and Appearance

Yeah I agree. I think it’s the right move. Studio 10 is on too long and I reckon they need more then one bulletin a day…

If they want to create a point of difference against their competitors, how about 10 News First: Midday
Pool the same resources of Studio 10?

The Ten News First brand was completely trashed when they pulled out of local news bulletin production in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. An extra 30 minutes at breakfast isn’t going to help how the brand is perceived when they’ve indicated to viewers they are no longer worthy of a dedicated evening local news service.

Surprised, but happy, that Ten’s Morning (Breakfast) News is starting again - in a week and a half’s time.

The time of 8am is fine. Studio 10 opens with news headlines anyway. A news service will expand on these headlines, and now can have a finance, sports and weather segments.

The 8am timeslot isn’t going to do it many favours. Workers are mostly on their way to work, and kids/parents are heading off to school.

7am might have been better but maybe the timeslot was dictated by resources already being onsite for Studio 10?

Yes, the timeslot for now is dictated by the resources already at the studios for Studio 10.

Agree that most workers would already be out the door by then. But the bulletin may be for those handful of parents/kids that are getting ready for drop offs if they go to their local schools (leave at 8.30 to be at school for the 9am start) - so may be suited for them as more than just news updates Sunrise and Today at 8am offer. I know its a small number though that will tune in though…

What Sunrise was like before Boland took over and changed the format. The name Breakfast was used for an ill-fated morning show experiment a decade ago hosted by Paul Henry, Andrew Rockford and Kath Robinson.

10 News First: Breakfast? Surprised they didn’t go with 10 News First: Sunrise or 10 News First: Today.

Would’ve liked to have seen this from 7:30 to actually build on their morning news offering and finished Studio 10 at 11:30. They then could’ve offered another 30 min bulletin at 11:30 if it made commercial sense.

Interesting tweet from McKnight

I kind of take what he is saying as a guess. I can’t see much more of a strategy when they are outdone by other networks in the news department.

I think an attempt at making them a news network will fail again even if what he is saying is true.

They would be better off doing “noodle” updates post studio 10 in the leadup to 5pm which would double for their online offerings.

Well, I suppose it’s half an hour less Studio 10 content they have to find each day - it was a long time to fill.

Any increased news output from 10 is very welcome and in 10 fashion it seems they were innovative enough to do it within existing resources.

Interesting move to use Lachlan in Sydney. I wonder if it will take it away from his NSW state political reporting which will be a pity or if he’ll still do the political reporter duties after presenting…

10 are in no position to attempt to directly compete with Seven and Nine.

I hope trying something different works out for them and leads to further experimentation in news. I can’t see a late bulletin materialising though.

My take is this is driven by either:

  • a desire by Studio 10 talent to cut their hours
  • a desire to expand the 10 News First brand so it’s seen to serve more than just 5pm

I can’t see the goal here to be to increase ratings or cut costs. The numbers on both those (costs/ ratings) would see negligible change - surely

Look at the article, it’s using existing resources, no more jobs required, no extra workload for staff. Plus the benefit of less filler and time for Studio 10 proper.

It’s a no brainer. I doubt there’s much more to it as Rob suggests. It’s just a rearrangement of existing resources.

That’s clearly BS.

Exactly. There’s a bit of effort in trying to put a rundown together, finding interview talent to appear, putting together the material the reporters want, writing tease to breaks and updating sports results/breaking news.

Should have at least 1-2 dedicated producers for this but knowing 10, definately not.

If 10 want this completely cheap and nasty they should just record it at 6.45pm the night before.

In theory yes… but you and I know there’s a little bit more in putting together a 30 minute news bulletin. Most likely an entertainment based producer will now be pulled and added into news.

I applauded the Sydney and Melbourne newsrooms in getting this together with the very little resources and budget to do so… but going forward Paramount need to provide 10 with more funding in the near future.

So a Studio 10 producer will be producing 8-8.30 which was already being done? It’s no different just because it’s a slightly different format.

Explain how it’s BS. Otherwise, that’s an unhelpful contribution and you should know better.

Agree… I’m just more concerned that some items required with producing news will be missed. But then again if they repeat some news reports from the day prior and run CBS Reports it can be done.
