It’s effectively just a longer-form version of the updates they already do. Yes, it requires scripting and compiling, my point is that it’s no different from doing other Studio 10 segments. And I am sure it will include a lot of CBS and international content.
I apologise my contribution hasn’t met the exacting standards of the board’s self appointed arbiter of quality. I’ll spell it out for you.
I would’ve thought it obvious there will be an additional workload for existing staff to get this bulletin to air. There’s clearly a difference between producing news product and producing content for a morning show, most of which would be produced the day before. Management has already cut staffing to the bone across its news operation so it looks like they’re relying on the goodwill of existing staff to extend themselves further. It’s disingenuous for them to declare this bulletin won’t require extra work.
If they intend to retain Lachlan Kennedy in his existing role, his day obviously becomes longer. The article states they intend to do live crosses. That will necessitate news crews starting earlier in the day in order to get to locations. Do they intend to do that in just Melbourne and Sydney or will they actually give some consideration to what’s happening at the start of the day in other capitals?
If they truly intend this to be a news bulletin to compete with what Sunrise, Today and the radio services are delivering as news, they need reporters and crews prepared and ready to go to air from locations at 8am. A bit different to packaging reports on events in the AM for their sole 5pm bulletin that airs nine hours later.
No doubt they will rely heavily on overnight pool vision with voiceovers, international news sourced from CBS and content from the previous day’s bulletin but viewers will be expecting anything that is breaking in their city at the start of the day to be covered. Ten is wasting their time if they don’t intend to do that.
New multichannel?
It’s quite obvious to me as someone who works in a newsroom that any content that requires VT’s, scripts, visuals of any kind requires work. You’re really arguing over semantics. The work required isn’t much more labour intensive as before, while being able to rebuild the News brand a bit. And yes I don’t think your contribution would have remained if you weren’t a moderator.
I can’t see them doing this, it’ll probably be a lot of vision being voiced over by the anchor.
Quite often when claims about “no additional workload” and “no additional resources required” are made, it’s usually because there is a decision to not do something else (that’s not always bad btw, it could be through finding efficiencies)
I’m all for doing more for less, but it seems like a really odd thing to be saying.
So the claim in the TVBlackbox article that the bulletin will include live crosses is wrong?
At times, during the S10 updates they already have reporters in the field so there will be a few crosses. They can also have their US and Europe correspondents ready for a live cross or look live to contribute.
10 currently have reporters in Sydney and Melbourne (and Canberra I think) doing live crosses throughout Studio 10. This wont be much different.
Midday is a bit of a deadzone for commercial television. You’d have more viewers at 8am.
An 8am news bulletin works well for someone like me - I work from home, typically log on with my coffee at 8am and having a more concise half hour bulletin is more appealing than Sunrise or Today.
Some nice new look social graphics across 10 News First’s accounts today:
Surprised we haven’t seen more media articles around 10’s new Breakfast bulletin, but I did find this from B&T with a statement from 10:
A Network 10 spokesperson told B&T : “ 10 News First: Breakfast expands and strengthens 10’s commitment to News across the day. The addition of a morning news bulletin offers viewers a concise, 30-minute news update at the start of their day, and extends 10’s daily news offering.
“From 10 News First: Breakfast at 8am, through to 10 News First at 5pm, and all the news updates in between, 10 has you covered with the latest breaking news and up to date reports on local, national and international stories.”
10’s commitment to news.
Sounds like a nothing article.
They can’t even confirm the names of the presenters (while Blackbox already mentioned them)
Yeah, nothing new there and more just surprised apart from the Daily Mail nobody else has picked up the story from what I could see.
I noticed they didn’t credit TV Blackbox for breaking the story or who the supposed hosts are, whilst providing some unlikely choices for who they’d like to see front the bulletin.
Also, its been 9 years since Wake Up (2013) was on air… not Breakfast (2012)
MediaWeek picked it up
The problem with this is it’s not really opened up a new slot. They’re still airing shitty repeats and nonsense between 6am and 8am
It’s not great, but it’s a start in the right direction. At least they’re doing something, right?
Slow and steady, they know they can’t compete with the others but it’s something they can expand on in future and build out timeslot wise.
Casting wise, Lachlan and Natasha are both great choices if it’s confirmed they are indeed attached to the new bulletin.
Takes the load off Studio 10 feeling like such a marathon most days.
