But you’re not taking into consideration seniority. They’ve both been in their roles for over 40 years combined.
Just imagine what that accounts for in long-service leave alone.
Lots of love for Mike…

Lachlan Kennedy and Hugh Riminton probably as well as they also used to be presenters.
Neither accounts for much, I’ve worked for the same company for 36 years.
Plenty of people in my office who have been there less than 5 years are payed far more than me due to having more senior rolls than mine (full news bulletin vs a few minutes at the end).
If they make me redundant on Monday, my payout figure only takes into consideration up to 9 years of service. I have family who work for companies who’s payout on years of service is capped at less than that.
Very few companies have redundancy payouts that increase indefinitely.
Can you get a redundancy payout if you were on a contact?
I have a hard time feeling Too much sympathy for News presenters who get let go. It’s an amazing gig. Incredible money. Not too much work. Incredibly satisfying job. They have such high profiles they can go on to write, blog, do books, radio, podcasts, talks, media, paid appearances…
When the average joe gets let go - it’s far far far harder
10’s enterprise agreement - freely available on the Fair Work Commission website - is much more generous for those employed under that.
agreed I feel for the producers, journos and especially crew who are much worse off and will have a lot more trouble getting work
Which one? I did a search and got quite a few:
https://www.fwc.gov.au/search/document/all?search_api_views_fulltext=network%20ten
The 2019 one would be the current agreement.
More info for severance is on page 52 13.8
This is what happens when TV is effectively run by accountants, rather than creatives. Far more concerned about the bottom line than serving the viewer - and if C5 is the model then god help them. That channel has lost all it’s identity in recent years and is now just a functional service with minimal effort.
How does the 6pm half hour currently work on Ten - is it effectively a rehash of the 5pm hour? Do wonder if making the 5pm and 6pm half-hour effectively the national bulletin then using 5.30pm as the state bulletin, pre-recorded where necessary, could be a way to make this messy situation possibly work.
Pretty much
Businesses should not be run by creatives
They should be run by creative business people.
They should be run by CEOs who know how to grow a business who also possess creative flair and intuition but ultimately hire very creative people Around them to come up with creative solutions to their problems and needs
I’d hire people to run it.
There is a good reason why TV in this country is run by people with business acumen rather then a creative one - the market has traditionally struggled to support three commercial networks and the networks have to cut their cloth to suit the situation.
There are only so many losses that any business can sustain - even those with owners with deep pockets (like Ten & ViacomCBS)
6pm news on Ten will never work no matter what they do. Still rating in the 200s with no further improvement in sight. Now it seems they’ve had to cut jobs to keep it going.
The problem I see here is that the media sphere (traditional and digital) hasn’t exactly ever reached “saturation point” as far as people (business is another issue, however prevailing it may be). And even with a slow climb out from the coronavirus pandemic, Australia’s population is still primed to grow faster than most other regions in the world. I don’t like what I see if this is a sign of what’s to come.
We can talk BuzzFeed, 10, maybe Ticker, the regional stations and sites… it’s not a good look.
I think you missed the boat of his post. ![]()
