Whichever way you spin it, it’s very slack how there’s still a relatively limited amount of native HD content on Ten HD after six months of broadcasting. Especially compared to the amount of native HD content that was being shown on Nine HD after that channel was broadcasting for six months!
However, let’s give them credit where it’s due. Unlike the network who’s HD strategy (aside from “special events”) is absolutely pathetic unless you follow a certain code of football or live in Melbourne/Adelaide, at least Ten are actually broadcasting a full time HD simulcast of their main channel in all metro markets while WIN carries Ten HD programming to all of it’s regional markets.
Really, who cares? Most people just want to see sporting events in HD, which they have. You get the odd news, drama or reality show in high dedinition also which is a bonus. The only people I see complaining are on here, I haven’t seen one single person on socials or otherwise give it a mention. It’s completely pointless to go round in circles… @lexington goes to the effort to give you inside information and you’re all suddenly experts again. Write some strongly worded letters to channel ten directly if it’s such a big issue.
Honestly, I could live with upscaled SD on this channel. I sit 4-5 meters away from my TV and it still looks sharp(er than SD) either way on any HD channel. So really, I’m not complaining either
As you may or may not be able to tell, I can understand things from the perspectives of both a viewer and broadcaster as far as Ten HD (well, HD broadcasting from all networks really) is concerned. There are various elements of both perspectives that I agree with, however there are others which I disagree with.
Of course, I really appreciate the insights of lexington (and any other insiders there may be on here) who often post quite interesting info on this forum and I wouldn’t say otherwise!
You guys are so annoying!!! All you do is whinge and whine. TENs HD channel may not be the best but it sure is a hell lot better then some networks have dished up, aka ABC and Seven.
If Ten didn’t have the HD up and running, the people on here would whinge about it, by having lack of HD coverage from Ten and on social media as to why big major sporting events aren’t in HD on TEN.
I am sorry but the squeaky wheel won’t get the oil anytime soon.

Is upscaling cheaper ?
[/quote]Yes. Upscaling happens whenever a low resolution image source is blown up, and it is necessary when displaying old footage produced in a lower resolution. If upscaling didn’t occur, the footage would only fill up a small (high res) portion of the screen in the centre, with a large black area surrounding it.
A common example of upscaling would be your full HD TV upscaling a PAL (576i) source (e.g. old video game console, VCR) to full HD (1080p).
Yes, they must upscale older footage when it’s played over their HD channels.
No. If it could, there would be no point in broadcasting in HD if there was a magic algorithm which reconstructs an infinite amount of detail from a low res image. See below.
not cheaper, but easier. upscaling on a broadcast occurs through hardware ‘as it happens’ so there is no extra servers for the larger bandwidth HD files etc.
Upscaling in a show (a youtube clip in a program) is quite common too, that happens in the edit suite.
…sorry for the triple post, phone wont let me do multiple quotes.
My tv is a few months old and 32 inches. It says it is 768p. So it downscaled a 1080i image but if the image is upscaled , is it showing a downscaled, then upscaled image ?
By ‘old footage’ other countries upscale older shows , not newer produced HD shows ?
In the early days of HD yes but for most countries HD has been the standard for the last few years now and upscaled shows are the exception rather than the rule. Indeed for sports at least downscaling Ultra HD 4K broadcasts is becoming increasingly common.
Yes, BT have produced all their Premier League coverage in the format for a year now and now also produce their Premiership Rugby and I think their National League Football (that’s the 5th tier of English football) in the format too.
Sky have also launched an Ultra HD service this year, again mainly built around the Premier League.
