Ten HD

I wonder what has changed then. Ten has less money perhaps .

Apart form live content (which most likely even excludes CBS The Morning since it is shown hours after it originally aired in the US, all the content would be delivered in a file based format over FTP or something similar. Even at the best quality this would only translate to a maximum of a few gigabytes for every hour of content, which would be achievable over a good ADSL connection let alone the fibre internet connection they would have. They would also not have a download limit to be worried about, direct fibre internet connections allow unlimited use and are only restricted by the speed made available which would be at a minimum several hundred mbps, possibily even 1GBps.

The most likely reason for TEN still showing a lot of their imported content in SD are:

  • They have to pay more for HD copies than SD.
  • For content that was available prior to Feb/Mar this year they had already downloaded it in SD since that’s all they would have required and don’t want to/cant be bothered downloaded it again in HD.
  • Still choosing SD copies so they download faster than HD would.
  • Not updating their download links/download methods to select HD instead of SD.

At the end of the day they all include some level of not really caring about making it available in HD, rather than a technical difficulty preventing them from getting HD content.

Was Extant on the main channel ?

I can now watch the first season on Stan from today in crystal clear high definition . Albeit for $10 a month…

Maybe that is why the networks aren’t caring . They are like Foxtel and think if people want HD they can pay for it ?

I wouldn’t bet on it! The content is probably still delivered in linear form. I know that’s how it’s done at some other networks. And even though Ten shows programs like CBSTM in delayed form, it would still be recorded at this end in linear form as it’s broadcast in the US.

If I can download US content in HD within hours of it airing, surely TEN (who are paying millions of dollars for the content) can?! If not, surely they should/could demand it.

My point exactly

I don’t think anyone’s disagreeing with you about that. I was pointing out that Ten is probably being a cheapskate.

Ten in Los Angeles has it’s office at the Pacific Television Center, which is a HD studio and transmission facility. Ten and Seven both use the Pac TV fibre and satellite network. http://www.pactv.com/la-connectivity.html Earlier this year Hostworks in Sydney and Pac TV in LA and London announced a new high definition video network for Australian customers. http://www.pactv.com/press.html

Ten would appear to have little excuse to not be acquiring content in high definition.

Are the commercials in high definition??

If HD copies cost more , then they were able to afford it back in the old Ten HD days. Now they have more multichannels I would have thought they would not cost a lot to run and make the network a bit of cash ?

I think if networks like 7 and 10 aren’t going to run HD on all content then they should at least make all their catchup services in HD then.

Hopefully in say 12 or 24 months time Ten HD isn’t still showing SD copies of US shows.

Some are, some (including ads that air in native HD on other networks, presumably because Ten HD wasn’t around when they got their original copies) are not.

As it’s been stated before HD copies do not cost more.

HD delivery from US studios has been the standard for over a decade now. If anything deviating from that and delivering SD is more costly for US studios

as I understand it, the capacity of the playout servers is the issue forcing SD copies to be recorded.

There is a plan in place to replace the system, but it wont be in the budget for another year.

Please don’t reply to me saying that they shouldn’t have launched the channel if they couldn’t do it… yadda yadda. I don’t want to hear it.

You mean to say that you are not personally responsible for anything and everything that goes on within Channel 10?!?!? I’m shocked :grinning:

The Ten broadcast standards, that were updated in February 2016 (judging by the file name of Programme Technical Delivery Requirements: Domestic Version). They accept programs in SD and HD, but it makes no mention of any preference for programs to be delivered in HD.
