They’ve already purchased their overseas programs in SD and will have to pay more when they buy future seasons in HD. This was also the issue a few years back when they last had HD. The networks baulked at the extra cost and many didn’t bother back then.
This was another reason why they decided to get their main channels off HD. I remember the ABC saying that purchasing programs in HD was a massive burden and reduced the content they could buy so they gave up on it.
I don’t think I have seen one program yet in HD. Even The Project looks upconverted rather than native HD. Maybe Ten wasn’t 100% ready yet and decided to just upconvert the SD feed for today.
That doesn’t explain why Family Feud was in SD. Why most of The Project’s graphics were in SD. Why not one promo is in HD. Apart from the news (in Sydney), The Project (a little bit) and Studio 10 no one in-house is producing anything in HD.
There’s no excuse as to why the only things in HD are the PRG (logo only), watermark and some of News/Current Affairs.
The only thing I’ve seen so far in proper HD on Ten HD were those bits and pieces (live studio shots & graphics only) on Sydney’s 5pm news. I’m pretty sure that everything else has been in SD!
If anything, Ten’s effort (or rather the lack of it) with their main HD channel is just making me appreciate Nine HD even more!
Even the commercials (many of which are now produced in HD and air airing in that format on other HD channels including Nine’s) aren’t even in HD. If I was an advertiser who had their commercial produced in HD and saw that Ten was only airing it in SD on their HD channel, I wouldn’t be impressed to say the very least.
There was one graphic that did look proper HD. Its like they just got the sharpness setting and turned it right down. Even ESPN HD in 720p looks sharper.
After watching the last 15 minutes of The Project, can confirm it’s in HD even though it’s the worst looking HD I have seen in quite awhile. The graphics are a mixed bag, some look proper HD, others look SD. The studio shot is HD but looks way too soft and missing detail.
Maybe as said before it is a cost thing, Ten not exactly got much money to spend so that is their effort and just do the sport and a few shows in proper HD perhaps.
So comparing Ten HD to One HD … any better really ?
Perhaps. Although it must be asked, would they possibly have been better off just simulcasting the sport and a few other shows in HD on One? It’s not as if that channel was airing much that benefited from HD!
From what I’ve seen so far, unfortunately I can’t say that regional viewers are missing out on too much by not having Ten HD.
Give it time. This really was a soft launch, so anything already in the system will need to be updated to the HD version. I’d say within a month most things you see as SD now that should be HD, will be.
Ten Brisbane got new studio cameras about 18 months ago, they’re HD… but being produced out of an SD studio.
facepalm as I said earlier, News is not in HD. It may look HD, but it’s SD.
…edit, and I’ll eat my hat. Sydney’s news is HD, all other’s are SD. I believe Brisbane will be the first to go HD for news (studio & graphics only, like Sydney.)
That is disappointing. Least though they are ahead of Seven and actually have a HD channel. Only the watermark looks good in HD. Not sure if it’s my OCD coming out but on the watermark, the HD part needs to be moved a couple pixels up.
The return of Ten HD is more than a fizzer. If you are doing a HD channel you have to make sure most programs in the schedule are in HD (especially overseas shows), even though they will cost more. Ten may have to rely on advertising revenue from MasterChef or do another capital raising to get the money to buy HD copies.
