I received lots of technology around Christmas 2023, including a Kindle and cover, 3 Nest Cams, two new Joy-Con controllers and accessories for my Nintendo Switch, a HDMI cable with micro-HDMI and mini-HDMI adapters, a Raspberry Pi 5 and case, lots of JB-Hi-Fi gift cards, a drone, a SanDisk USB and a USB storer.
Subsequent to the door coming off an Alaska Airlines flight, people have been searching the ground for items that had been sucked out of the plane.
One person found an iPhone that survived the 16,000 ft drop undamaged.
Found an iPhone on the side of the road... Still in airplane mode with half a battery and open to a baggage claim for #AlaskaAirlines ASA1282 Survived a 16,000 foot drop perfectly in tact!

When I called it in, Zoe at @NTSB said it was the SECOND phone to be found. No door yetš pic.twitter.com/CObMikpuFd
He has been approached by multiple media to be interviewed. Lots of comments about how Apple might use this in advertising.
In case you didn't see it, there was a broken-off charger plug still inside it! Thing got *yanked* out the door

The door was also found (joke) ![]()
My new Thinkpad T16 arrived today. It was a great purchase but omg It took all afternoon to set up.
Jack, I hope you have a fun time with the new ThinkPad. I am setting up a tech room in June/July and plan to buy a new HP laptop, a HP desktop, 2 monitors and desk in May in preparation for the room.
i reckon build a custom desktop instead, probably get more out of it
Will do. ![]()
This would be my ultimate goal but I donāt have space for a pc set up at the moment.
Really didnāt need the upgrade but the preorder offers tempted me too much.
Preordered the s24 Ultra from my s22 Ultra.
$1060 with accessories and trade in of old phone. Couldnāt resist.
Where did you order from?
Direct from Samsung
Ooh, nice! ![]()
@MichaelPower gave me a heads up that JB HI-FI already have demo units in store, so I took a squiz Friday afternoon:
Been eyeing the Galaxy Ultra range since 2022 but held off until firmware/security support for the Pixel 5 lapsed, which happened in November.
Iāve rocked Google phones since the Nexus 6P in 2015, and have had a Pixel 5 since 2020 but itās time for a change, and Iām happy to get entrenched in the Samsung ecosystem too! ![]()
This Optus deal is almost perfect as I was hoping for a watch/buds combo, but Iād prefer the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic which has the rotating bezel.
Titanium Grey is nice (reminds me of my 6P), though I wouldnāt mind a pop of colour with the Titanium Yellow. ![]()

I have still have an S20+, which still works fine, but is getting a bit long in the tooth and is probably due for an upgrade.
But Iām intrigued by the built in AI capabilities on.the S24. Iāll be very interested to see what the reviews are like as to whether it really makes a difference or not, as Iāve always thought cloud based AI is a lot more powerful and capable anyway (?).
Even then, Iāll probably wait until April/May when any significant bugs are ironed out and prices drop a bit.
The Google Pixel 8 Pro is the only other phone Iād probably consider. Iāve never had an iPhone, but i canāt see a compelling reason to switch to iOS.
Gosh those are an ugly shape.
I donāt mind it, but the Ultra is just a bit too big, heavy and expensive for me.
For me, Iām not interested in the AI features, though I can see how some of them could be useful, like straightening up writing written on the S Pen, and also categorising sections of notes into groups related to what is being written about.
My current plan is wait for the reviews to confirm the battery and camera performance are just as good as last yearās, so I wasnāt going to bite the bullet on preordering just yet.
And for reference, hereās how good the S22 Ultraās camera was in 2022 (time stamped):
It is quite a boxy shape (as are most phones today) though the performance and camera quality is the compromise.
My āphabletā Nexus 6P was quite big for the time, but I loved the larger form factor and have missed it. Its size is not too far off the S24 Ultraās so itāll be a welcome return. Once you use a larger phone, itās hard to go back. ![]()
I noticed on Friday afternoon that a Good Guys store in Canberra (more specifically at South.Point Tuggeranong) also have demo S24 units in store. Sadly, I do not have any pictures of the phones.
I still use a Pixel 6, which still works fine for my apps, so I will not upgrade phones yet to Samsung.
There have already been early benchmarks which put the battery significantly ahead of the s23 Ultra. Gen3 processor is a beast
I still have my S20 as well hahaha.
Yeah, none of the S21, S22 or S23 really gave me enough of a reason to upgrade.
I last went from an S9 to S20 (there was only the S10 in between) mainly to get 5G.
