Happy 20th Birthday, iPod

I think a lot of people donā€™t even realise that Apple is still producing the iPod Touch.

Iā€™m surprised they havenā€™t tried an Anniversary edition with a clickwheel and pitch it as a high end lossless player or something.

The Touch itself is way too expensive though. The main market would be a device to give a kid who isnā€™t ready for a phone as a gaming/video device - and the cheap iPads do that much better, and a hand-me-down iPhone without a sim probably does it too, given how rarely they update it.

Telstra has partnered with the federal government to acquire Digicel operations in the South Pacific region, which provides mobile and network services in Fiji, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu. The acquisition comes after reports China Mobile had shown interest in buying the South Pacific arm of Digicel.

the only reason i would not give my kids an old iphone is that even without a sim 000 and 112 still call emergency services

Intelā€™s 12th generation of chips seem to have finally brought some competition back.

Key word: ā€œseemā€.
These are terrible chips. Yes, they look like theyā€™re more powerful than the AMD chips, but good lord the i9 12900K can chew through 230w of power at maximum load, compared to the AMD systems who are at approx 150w.
The i5 12600K actually seems pretty decent and has a comparable wattage to AMD.

Intel are clearly still far behind from AMD, and even further from Apple.

I went with an AMD Ryzen gaming laptop (Dell G5 SE) with an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H CPU and Radeon RX 5600M GPU. Very happy with it. Can throw any game on it, itā€™ll work great with minimal heat. On older games, even the in-built Vega chip does well.

I still think Intel has some catching up to do!

Bought a new M1 MacBook Air the other day to replace my shitful 2018 MBP (what a dog of a model) - it has impressed me so far

I do agree that the wattage definitely needs work on the i9 systems
The Ryzen 9 5950X is still the chip to buy for generally the same performance, but far greater efficiency, and at a better price today. Intel requires further optimisations if they really want to beat the Ryzen 9.

Yes, this is the chip to watch. Given that the attention has been on Ryzen 5 3600(X)/5600(X) for a while, I daresay this is the one to buy over the Ryzen. Most modern systems will be able to adequately cater for the slight bump in wattage if going for an i5 12600K.

Apple said the online store would start with about 200 parts and tools aimed at fixing the most common issues with displays, batteries and cameras on iPhone 12 and 13 models.

Under the self-service program, Apple customers will be able to buy those parts directly to perform their own repairs after reading a manual.

Customers will be offered the same pricing on parts and tools as independent repair shops and, after completing a repair, will be able to return their used parts to Apple to receive a discount.

Apple said the program would begin early next year in the United States and expand to more countries later in the year.

Will be interesting to see how this affects any future warranty claims.

Never thought Iā€™d see the day where Apple implemented this kind of service.

Guessing this is a trial in case right to repair laws start coming into place in certain jurisdictions that require them to have this option available.

This is Apple trying to get ahead of the inevitable wave - as youā€™ve mentioned, right to repair is gaining some traction and the EU is making some serious noises about sustainability in mobile device land
