Who am I attacking? I’m not attacking Jason personally, I’m commenting on the situation.

I don’t mean Jason when I say “you” I mean like you as in everyone who gets offended by everything.

The world we are living in now is just so woke. Everyone’s offended by anything. It’s just nonsense.

You seem to live in a bubble where everything is clearly either black & white, that and you have strong opinions on topics which means you can’t see things from other peoples perspective.

Whether you agree with someone else is irrelevant, try getting your point across without getting nasty.

This is a very simple scenario. Jason said the word guys isn’t inclusive to women. The dictionary definition of guys contradicts this. End of story.

You just proved my point.

It’s not that simple, maybe for you, and whilst I agree it’s widely used, it doesn’t mean it’s inclusive. I don’t care if it’s in the dictionary or not. Times change, it was once used to refer to usually just men and I believe in time it will move towards not being as inclusive as you think it is to be used for females or people who identify as other than male or female.

Ending a discussion with “don’t you have anything better to do” and “end of story” is you again being narrow minded about certain issues and shutting others down for having differing opinions than you.

It does not matter what Google says as the definition of the word “guys”. It should be avoided in this day and age as others have said historically it referred to males only which is non inclusive to women and others who may identify themselves differently. For this reason alone it should not be used on modern TV programs.

I don’t see a big issue with it either, guys is used quite a lot in a social environment , and it really is not an issue for me. Don’t see the harm in it being used by news reporters. My concern is the COVID-19 variants .
Jason you don’t have to like it, but don’t get defensive or give people a lecture, it doesn’t look good. Believe me I used todo that it’s not good. It’s just a discussion forum. Just chill.

I’m not getting defensive I’m just expressing an opinion.
Just because it is used commonly outside of TV doesn’t mean it isn’t offensive to some people . If the media is proactive in regards to this and wants to be as inclusive as possible then this little thing makes a big difference. It may not be a big deal to you personally but that’s besides the point of this discussion.

Excuse me. Your being defensive right now. My god. I can’t talk to you while your like that. I’m ending this discussion.

Jason raises a good point. While guys may colloquially have come to mean all genders, for many people it’s still a gendered term. In an age of equality and inclusivity, all businesses and especially those with broad influence like media organisations need to examine their use of language to ensure it’s not causing offence. While guys may be on the lesser end of the offensiveness spectrum (compared to IT terminology listed above like whitelist / blacklist), it doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing - especially given it costs nothing to do.

Just because it’s not an issue for you, doesn’t mean it’s not an issue to others.

I’ve also seen some women who don’t like being called “mate” because they think it’s a gender specific word used between males.

But I’ve also seen the argument that this is ridiculous and women also use it to describe their friends and always have used it. In fact, I know a lot if women who do use it. I don’t think we need stop using the term because some in the minority have this opinion.

If you are not part of a minority group then it’s hard to understand how it affects people. Australia unfortunately is very much behind the times in regards to this. As @Cassie84 said it costs nothing to make the change.

It wasn’t a bad program today. Good to see Natasha presenting the news.

Any further discussion on that topic can go in the Gender thread elsewhere on the board.
