yes, I’m sure they can… with appropriate notice. You can’t just say - righto, from tomorrow you start at 5am.
happens pretty often in TV actually
Yea they need to shift it now.
Moving it to 6am to prime breakfast viewing time is only going to be good for the show in the long run. It will really give the whole show a chance to evolve and experiment and try an alternative to Today sunrise and news breakfast.
That said. It needs some format and content tweaks - and I think colours on set and in graphics would have to shift away from pink and green to something that feels more newsy and less mid morning
6 hours of Studio 10 though?
Shorten the other end and finish at 11 with morning news.
Probably won’t happen any time soon but hey, never hurts to think.
It’s not for 10, though. They couldn’t even get over 50k five years ago, let alone now. That is- their best result at breakfast was a third of Today’s lowest result on record.
Moving Studio 10 earlier is a crazy idea when they get more viewers later in the morning, which has been the case since its inception. I don’t think, even in their peak days, S10 has ever got over 40k in the first hour (8.30-9.30am). And you’re suggesting having infomercials at breakfast too. The earlier you move Studio 10 and the longer you make it, they lose even more of their audience and their hosts become even more drained.
Sure, for one off specials… not permanent changes.
It’s a good time to trial a 7am to 11am start maybe as there is no audience at this stage, but they can’t do anything too drastic either.
I doubt audiences will return anyway, doesn’t make a massive difference to the show.
Let’s say someone wakes up before 7, they can flick on Studio 10.
Very true but look how long it has taken abc news breakfast to become competitive. They were sub 30k years ago and now the push the today show. If you’re ever going to push into a new time slot you need to be there committed for 10 or more years to ever make an impact.
@cmo I agree with you about building an audience. That’s why I suggest not moving S10. They’ve been competitive in the mid-morning slot before, meaning it’s possible with an evolution of the content and format. Whereas, at breakfast, News Breakfast is now very competitive, as you say, and I believe the market is too crowded for a fourth show. Focus on fine-tuning S10, not trying to compete in the breakfast slot.
No infomercials at breakfast no
Move to 6, end at 10 - 4 hours.
Infomercials after 830 only
What’s better to have on air now, The Talk, ET and bold? Or studio 10 live which can start evolving into a news show?
The money is at breakfast - everyone knows that. Sunrise and today pull in hundreds of Millions in as revenue.
10 needs to get into this valuable space
And a time like this is a one is a lifetime demand for news consumption.
Move it, fine it, grow it, be patient
News breakfast has taken 10 years
Different mission and motives between the ABC and 10. I also don’t think Studio 10 is actually breakfast-time material at all, much like a lot of the hot topics segments on Sunrise and Today that are placed before 8am. But I definitely agree that they should at least expand their offering during the crisis.
My opinion is that 10 commission an early shift in Melbourne (maybe include Brisbane after DST ends) to produce a rolling newscast from 5-8am for at least the next few weeks, get more 10daily staffers in early for some crosses on lesser aspects around the crisis, etc.
If ever they do move Studio 10 up that early, I would hope it’d be only temporarily. They need a different canvas for that slot.
Agree with all you say. It’s not breakfast material. But it can evolve, And it;'s 100 x more breakfast material than The Talk, ET and Bold
Between 8.30 and 12pm, S10 averages 50k (at best). Earlier this month, there were days where that average was <40k. The only reason that they are still on air, with those numbers, is for two reasons- they are a part of the news department (as opposed to entertainment like a few years ago) and infomercials. And you’re suggesting cutting down on the infomercials and airing them earlier in the morning, when they get more viewers later in the morning?
Obviously, we’re not going to agree and Channel 10 doing breakfast is a tiresome debate. So, all I’m going to say further on the matter is this… When you are the number 1 mid-morning show, consider extending. But, in the meantime, the Studio 10 production team really needs to focus on improving their own show where they can get an audience and where they get revenue, not on the breakfast slot.
Just to be clear, during a once in 100 year demand for news, you think a lineup of american tone deaf celebrity fluff of The Talk, ET and Bold is better than a live show with the ability to cover news
Got it!
Studio 10 is not the answer to that demand - at least not in its current form and not without certain costs and compromises to not just move the production to an earlier shot, but transform it.
Unlike with Cyclone Debbie, which was a short-term event, this crisis looks to be with us for a while. “Special editions” running from 5am every day with existing crew and talent won’t cut it.
I know what you are saying but it is a better option that what is there now. Agree to disagree.
In other words, copy Seven and Nine again?
I was thinking more like NBC Today with the same branding but different hosts and formats as the show goes on.
