Stan Sport

It also shows there is demand to show football on the major networks, as in the past it has mostly been on Fox Sports (A-League, Asian Champions League) and Optus Sport (EPL, UEFA Champions League) with SBS showing the World Cup and previously showing the EPL , A-league and UCL.

Having more live football on free to air is good for for football fans, however it does mean more subscriptions, to watch the European competitions, EPL and A-league.

It is especially a good thing to have A-league and Socceroos matches on free-to-air.

The same thing is happening in the US with soccer rights split between ESPN/ABC (just to name a few, MLS/US national team matches, Bundesliga and La Liga from August), CBS/Paramount+ (Champions League, NWSL & CONCACAF), Fox (FIFA World Cup & MLS/US national team matches), NBC (Premier League) and beIN Sports (Ligue 1)

And in the UK you need access to the BBC, ITV, Sky, BT and Amazon Prime just to see all the broadcast EPL and National team matches.

Ideally all football/ soccer would be in the one place to watch but with how much there is around the globe, I dunno if that’s really possible.

I’m sure Stan Sport would make a bid on the EPL when Optus’s current rights expire.

If Optus still want it, they’re going to keep it. The existence of their sport offering depends on it

Optus has a large football fan base. Before COVID, they were wanting to get the Rugby rights shared with 10 as well as Euro Leagues in which beIN Sports currently airs

I think Optus will keep the EPL but Stan Sport might be interested, depending on if they are successful with the Uefa Champions League bid.

STAN SPORT SERVES UP

ROLAND GARROS 2021 THIS SUNDAY

Every match from every court of the Roland Garros 2021 tournament will stream ad-free, live and on demand on Stan Sport.

The 125th edition of Roland Garros begins in Paris this Sunday, with every match from every court of the year’s second Grand Slam tournament streaming ad-free, live and on demand on Stan Sport.

Stan Sport’s live streaming coverage begins from 6.50PM AEST on Sunday night , with select matches from the tournament also broadcast on 9Gem and Channel Nine.

Australia will be eagerly watching as world No. 1, Ash Barty , returns to Roland Garros for the first time since winning in 2019. Following a strong performance at the Australian Open and a great season on clay, Barty is after her second Grand Slam title.

Second-highest ranked female Aussie, Ajla Tomljanović , will be joined by Astra Sharma , a wildcard entry, in her third consecutive year at Roland Garros.

The hallowed outdoor clay courts of Roland Garros will also see the long-awaited return of Roger Federer , hoping to deny defending champion Rafael Nadal from securing his 14th French Grand Slam title. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will also be looking to dethrone Nadal at this year’s tournament.

Serena Williams is set to play after a three-month hiatus since the Australian Open. The 23-time Grand Slam and three-time Roland Garros champion will continue her quest for a 24th major title.

The Australian men will be out in force, headed by Alex de Minaur and John Millman , both of whom are ranked in the world’s Top 50.

The youngest Aussie in the draw, 21-year-old Alexei Popyrin (No. 62), is coming off a fine performance at the Australian Open where he upset world No. 13 David Goffin in the first round.

Jordan Thompson and James Duckworth round out Australia’s men’s contingent, joined by wildcard entry Chris O’Connell .

Stan Sport’s live streaming coverage of the Roland Garros tournament begins from 6.50PM AEST this Sunday, with every match from every court streaming ad-free, live and on demand.

Have to wonder how sustainable ad free coverage is on Stan considering traditionally subscription sports stations have aired ads.

Not really.

The ad-supported product is on Nine’s broadcast channels. The ‘all courts’ feed is the add-on via Stan.

No different to what pay-TV operators have been doing themselves for a few years.

I’ve had the same thought in regards to Stan’s rugby coverage because it doesn’t show ads at all - not just when there’s live play (like Fox does).

Tennis is a different matter (as OnAir outlined)

This isn’t in the press release but according to the AFR, the deal allows for ‘key’ matches such as finals to air on Nine

With Optus, Stan and Paramount+ all signing new deals for football rights it would seem the EPL rights negotiations when they expire in May will be on for young and old. They’ll be so lucrative for any streamer.

As in airing on both Nine & Stan Sport at the same time?
