I love my sport, I’ve tried watching this a few times and I think the exact opposite. Think it’s all fluff, no substance whatsoever.
The ratings for the program have been all over the place, the week before it rated about an extra 30k viewers off the back of a larger amount of viewers watching Five Bedrooms / Bull - which when you’re coming off such a low base are more respectable but not great.
The show is largely a victim of insufficient promotion, ad-hoc scheduling, inconsistent start times and generally fairly poor lead-in’s.
Ant’s rant brought to you by 10 daily now:
A show like this should only be for Saturday or Sunday at 6pm. It would then follow on form the news to provide extended sports coverage from the weekend. The timeslots that they’ve had this show in have just been all wrong.
No way for Saturday at 6pm, you might as well just chunk on Before The Game instead in that slot. If anything it has to be shown after Sunday, as a lot of sport happens Sunday night into Monday morning. Sports that come from Europe and America.
Monday night is the perfect timeslot as it will have HYBPA? as lead-in for most of the year.
Ten needs to move this show or axe it. It’s completely underperforming.
As others have said, 6pm on weekends, or even Sunday Mornings would be a better option. But it’s clear it’s not working where it is.
I would think its about time that 10 needs to stop having the Sports Tonight on primary channel and move it to 10Bold because it is not working at all. 43k the day before yesterday night. THat show should have been moved to 10Bold several weeks ago.
Or just axe it??
Why put money in something that’s not working.
shifting it to 10Bold is not going to improve on that
Isn’t that what 10 is condemed for? Jumping the gun and axing a show without giving it time to work. Not the best attitude- I think moving it to 6pm Sundays or Mondays could work.
It has had plenty of chances and it has underperformed and Ten have notoriously kept moving it around, there was no consistency with time slots.
Read above… I stated that.
Id air Sports Tonight at 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays as the show it used to be. One host, recapping the days sports. It cant do any worse that what 10 airs in those timeslots anyway.
And then air the current panel-type show on Mondays after HYBPA. Recap the weekend’s games. And leave it there for a while. A big lead in.
Or if they are serious about building news up and building sports up leading into bidding for high profile sports in a few years then they should do it properly and go with:
@ 6pm weekends on 10 and
@ 6pm nightly on bold to drag some male
Eyeballs off the news programs
Repeat both late night every night on bold.
The problem I have with this ST, is that it simply isn’t the ST I and everyone once loved.
A sports news service. It was your nightly sports report during the news, but stretched out to a 20-30min standalone program.
I’m all for refreshing and new directions, but they should’ve gone with something totally brand new, as we’ve seen with a certain show very recently, a heritage name can sometimes contribute to be a detriment.
Yes, and the sporting and online world has simply moved on.
As I’ve said many times in this thread, this show has no point of difference. It’s all very well wanting a Sports Tonight back but the delivery of highlights etc has changed. You’ve got to give something more than just a news package. Fox Sports News has The Serve with a daily debate around a series of topics. That seems closer to what it should be.
This is a good piece about how Sports Center have had to change because a highlights/wrap show no longer works. http://amp.awfulannouncing.com/2016/the-sports-highlight-show-is-dead.html
One of my favourite sports shows is the hour of Sports Center hosted by Scott van Pelt early afternoon Aus time (midnight ET from memory). I don’t follow US Sport that closely but his commentary is worth it alone.
This still going?
That’s a beautiful set
