The 2025 Formula One calendar was released tonight Australian time, and the Melbourne GP has reclaimed its place as the season opener. It will be held on the weekend of March 14-16.
The Olympic flame that will burn throughout the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was lit tonight during a ceremony in Olympia, Greece 6:15pm AEST.
I get that the Victorian government pay to have these events but it would be nice if they played games outside Victoria, last year’s men’s world cup warm up games were all in Melbourne. The last 11 men’s world cup qualifiers have also all been in Victoria (2 in Bendigo).
I don’t think the Boomers have played a game in Sydney since 2011.
At the meeting, AOC President Ian Chesterman AM announced three major initiatives with:
- A new athlete funding scheme in addition to the AOC’s Medal Incentive Funding;
- An Indigenous Athlete Performance Grants program; and
- A fund to support initiatives to grow the number of Olympic Indigenous athletes through to Brisbane 2032 and beyond.

Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.
According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.
Scheffler was charged with four offences, including one felony, before he was released about three hours after his arrest. He then returned to the course and shot a five-under 66 at the second round of the PGA Championship.
Kenyan 10,000-metre runner Rodgers Kwemoi was banned for six years for suspected blood doping 18 times and disqualified from Olympics and world championship races.
Track and field’s Athletics Integrity Unit said Kwemoi was stripped of seven years of results through August 2023 for a “deliberate, systematic, and sophisticated doping regime.”
He lost his seventh-place finish at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, fourth place at the 2019 worlds in Qatar and his bronze medal result from the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Kwemoi also was stripped of the world junior title he won as a teenager in 2016 in a championship record time.
The portrait by the Archibald Prize winner is part of a collection of prominent figures in Australia, and includes King Charles, Adam Goodes and Scott Morrison.
Swimming Queensland has written a letter to the gallery asking it to consider taking it down.
He said Olympic gold medallist Kyle Chalmers had come to Swimming Queensland with concerns about the portrait on behalf of fellow swimmers.
In a statement released this week, the National Gallery of Australia indicated it would not pull the portrait down

NBL to host a Magic Round/Gather Round event at the start of the 2024-25 season in Perth and Joondalup
I think the BBL/WBBL might be next to come up with a Magic/Gather Round of their own, though I do think they’ve had a series of matches involving all eight teams that have been played in one region at the same time.
The WBBL also staged its entire 2020 season in Sydney due to travel restrictions and border closures.
