Uncertainty surrounds the future of the Beach Volleyball World Championships planned for Adelaide next year, as the federal government has not committed funding.

The South Australian government has signed on as a sponsor but there was no funding allocated in the recent federal budget.

The lack of federal funding was confirmed by Office for Sport official Travis Haslam under questioning by SA Senator and Liberal sport spokeswoman Anne Ruston during Senate Estimates hearings last week.

In a statement to the Sunday Mail a spokesman for federal Sport Minister Anika Wells said the government “never made a commitment to this event”.

However, it “has several major sport announcements to reveal soon”, he said.

Office for Sport officials will meet with Volleyball Australia again this week.

Shaw and Partners Financial Services is the new naming rights sponsor of Ironman and Ironwoman Series, replacing Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain which has been involved in the sport for the past four decades.

Saw this on 10 news tonight. Was weird that they did a whole full blown story on this when they don’t even hold the rights. It wouldn’t even warrant a voiceover given the niche nature of the sport.

Sponsored bit I’m sure

Florida Panthers have won Stanley Cup for the first time in their history, beating Edmonton Oilers 2-1 in the 7th and final game of the National Hockey League finals at home to win the series 4-3. The Panthers won the first three games, before the Oilers claimed the next three to force the decider.
