NFL Super Bowl LVIII is heading into overtime, after Kansas City scored a field goal with nine seconds left in regular time, to tie the scores with San Francisco at 19-all.

These are the overtime rules for NFL playoff matches (including Super Bowl)

The 49ers scored first in the overtime period with a field goal, but the Chiefs responded with a touchdown by Mecole Hardman Jr. with three seconds remaining, helping his side to a 25-22 win. It is Patrick Mahomes’ third Super Bowl victory as a quarterback, and the Chiefs’ second consecutive NFL title (their third in five years).

No surprise Mahomes has been named Super Bowl MVP for the third time.

49ers’ Mitch Wishnowsky became the first Australian to play in two Super Bowls (and lost both).

It was a great game! Most people prefer an offensive shootout but it’s just as good when two strong defences go head to head.

And Mahomes’ big game experience was always going to be an advantage when it matters - and it shows.

Congrats Chiefs fans!

Last few Super Bowls have been close and a defensive game doesn’t mean it’s boring such as Super Bowl XLI and today’s game for example.

Also longest Super Bowl ever played given the length of the Overtime game and the first postseason game under the revamped Overtime rules. Super Bowl LVIII was the first and only game in the 2023-24 Playoffs to go into overtime.

CBS is notorious for airing Super Bowl fizzers this century (think Super Bowls XXXV, XLI, XLIV, 50, LIII and LV) and the only close games were Super Bowls XXXVIII, XLVII and LVIII

As a Saints fan, I must disagree that SB44 was a fizzer. The game was still close until the final minutes of the 4th quarter, and it gave us two of the greatest Super Bowl moments of all time: Sean Payton’s decision to try an onside kick on the second half kickoff (and the subsequent recovery by the Saints), and Tracy Porter’s pick-six late in the fourth to seal the game.

While Super Bowl LVIII was the smallest-attended game (outside of the pandemic Bowl), the game drew 123.4million viewers in America which is the most watched Super Bowl of all time and the first program to crack 120 million viewers on a single network and the first to do so since the Moon Landing 65 years ago.

Makes sense given the capacity of the host stadium is the smallest in history.

Is that correct though? I thought that number included OTA CBS, P+ and Nick?

Yep.

So not a single network technically. Still a crazily high number though!
